Talking about this with a mate over the weekend.

Say you won the Lottery - more than enough money to live on for ever - and you simply failed to turn up at work on the Monday, what would the penalties be?

This is assuming you have some sort of average staff job, that you're not a Cheif Exec or something.

Could you actually just never turn up and refuse to communicate?

Would a letter of resignation with immediate effect suffice?

As I say, just a theoretical question...

could ring them up, tell them to get fked and then get fired instantly....what would it matter, you have enough money to live on forever, you're not going to be looking for references are you?

if you won't be needing a reference I wouldn't worry

in the past I've negotiated my way out of a notice period but they weren't too happy about it

another way is to find out what is classed as gross misconduct and if have won the lottery, maybe phone them up telling the boss that you are really stoned and can't be bothered to get out of bed today

most companies not seem to like drugs for some reason

recall being on some temp job, 3 weeks in to a 3 month contract got a job offer, told them was leaving and that was it, they kept the last week's wages, but not a massive loss

A collegue and I discussed this. If he was to win the lottery he was going to work his notice. Muppet.

If I had been fortunate enough to win enough money to never need to work again, I certainly wouldn't be worrying about what penalties my employer imposed. A quick phone call the minute the money was in the bank, to say, "ram it" and thats it. Off to the south of France.

It's illegal to make someone work against their will ( called slavery I recall) thus if an employee chooses to leave the employer can't force them to work, just withold pay owing etc. Not a problem if you've won the lottery
