Simple question really - I'm just about (hopefully biggrin) to buy an S4 Avant. Lovely jubbly. Been looking for a while but at last found the perfect spec - should be picking it up tomorrow.

Now, my question - is it recommended/needed to use V-power? I've always used it in my sports cars, and I assume the V8 Audi has a knock sensor and so can advance/retard the timing automatically as necessary - therefore some (albeit small) advantage.

So - is it needed? Happy to use it if so, have done for many years, but just wanted to make sure biggrin

The B6 S4 will run OK on 95RON but my experience says it runs better on Super and I'm certain that it returns better mpg. Don't ruin the ship for a ha'peth of tar! 98RON is still cheaper than diesel.

I've always thought it was worth buying v-power for the cleaning agents alone.

Good luck with the purchase (at long last) and be sure to post photos and let us know what you think when you pick it up.

Thanks Marc! Having just read on RS246 some more, it seems super/v-power is recommended and it does make a difference.

As an aside, have you seen that left foot braking thing to adjust the ECU?

Yes, I've read about the braking thing, although I don't know if it works on Tiptronic cars as they already have a sport mode which gives a sharper throttle response.

Ah good point! I did go for a manual in the end (don't do many miles and thought I'd miss the gear change - especially as I like to do driving tuition type courses and things) - but will certainly give it a go to find out.

Will keep you posted smile

Hi Tony, you need to look at the pictures is this thread. It is a B6 S4 that BP used to show how much cleaner your engine stays with good 98ron. The bloke who posted them used the wrong type of engine to make his point, but thats by the way.

You also need to read this thread, the posts from "nihc" to get the best out of your new car. Yes it does work.

Hi Tony,

My first ever post, but having just had my S4 remapped, the guy who did it strongly recommended using high octane fuel. I used to use it every now and again, but now make a point of putting 98/99 in if possible. Gets a bit more expensive, but well worth it;)

I would say use a Super unleaded. I don't think I would use anything else in the RS4 - she certainly runs very well with it drivingthumbup

On the flip side, my S4 is the only car I have owned were V-Power or super doesn't make any noticable difference. I like to run a tank through once a month for cleaning purposes (I have to buy petrol from local yokel garages round here) and I notice no difference.

I have owned (counting on fingers) 6 cars previously were V-Power/Ultimate made various amounts of difference but the S4 is not one of them.

I've done 25K in the S4 (usually flat out) now and I don't bother with the extra expense of V-Power.
