E30 - E36 touring - What to look for...

To the PH knowledge base...
Looking at getting a Tourer for by Triathlon bike, Mountain bike etc. Like the look of the E-30's but a decent one seems to be hard to find!
Quite like the E36 too - dilemmas!
As I'm getting on a bit (well, over 32!) then I can go for the larger 6 pot engines, and I don't do a huge number of miles so I a quite happy with the fuel consumption and even a high mileage car...
So - what should I be looking for (found a few info sites and a loosely written buyers guide) and what sort of prices could I expect to pay for a decent car (quite like the sport seats!). Budget could go as far as £2500...
