HI CAN ANYONE TELL ME IF ITS NORMAL FOR THE BOOST GAUGE NOT TO MOVE WHEN ENGINE IS REVVED WHILE CAR IS STATIONARY, IF THIS IS NOT NORMAL WHATS THE CURE. ALSO COULD THIS BE WHY THE CAR DOES,NT WANT TO RUN WITH THE CHOKE OFF.
PLEASE HELP.
THANKS ANDREW.

I get no boost on my 90 SE as I rev it while stationary. I think the engine management systems deals with that issue on my car. I am not sure how your car would react.

Hi Andrew ,
The same thing is occurring on mine , but mine is caused by a leak between the manifold and the wastegate adapter pipe I think . I,m biting the bullet and removing the engine and box and renewing all belts ,gaskets etc and checking the wastegate . I would assume that you should register boost even if stationary as it is built up by engine revs and not load / roadspeed .( My wifes Saab Aero guage shows boost whilst stationary )My car too has only done 1000 miles with 2 engine rebuilds .The previous owner didnt drive it enough . I think the moral is DRIVE THEM !!. I,m no mechanic but I hope the above helps.

My esprit SE boost gauge moves while stationary if I rev it hard. As far as I am aware there is no problem with it. My car does seem to like to boost a lot though and boosts more than you would expect even at constant speed when there is no demand for extra acceleration.

Danny that is unusal to have constant boost at hwy speed. I do get a little boost, maybe .3 when I go above 70 mph at minimal throttle. Of course I get the usual boost if I open up the throttle at that speed.

I rev my car into 4-5K and get lttle or no movement while stationary. When in motion I get a lot of boost after 3K. I think it has to do with VSS in the right rear hub that tell the ECU how hard to fire the turbo.

The older cars do not have the VSS or ECU so I'm not sure how the turbo would react when reving while stationary.

thanks for the help guys, as anybody out there got a s3 turbo who can tell me if the boost gauge should move when revving the car stationary.
thanks andrew.

I would check for a leak on the inlet system but in general it is not uncommon to get very little boost whilst stationary.
The turbo requires a lot of exhaust gasses to start spinning fast enough to produce boost, the exhaust is not only a function of revs but the amount of fuel, so more throttle and revs the more gases, hence more boost. Also this needs to be sustauned for a period whist turbo accelerates to speed (lag)

When stationary there is no resistance and very little throttle is needed to rev the engine. Blipping the throttle will not cause enough gases normally to spin the turbo to required speed unless a very small turbo (saab).

Mine does move a little (from memory) if i give it plenty of revs but allowing for gauge inaccuracy etc it is possible another may not move at all.

Obviously another with similar model could confirm this.

OK THANKS FOR THAT, ITS NOT LEGAL TO TAKE ON ROAD AT THE MOMENT SO I WILL SEE WHAT HAPPENS WHEN IT IS.

On my 87 Turbo HC I don't get any boost while stationary (even with a stuck wastegate!!) I seem to think its a power demand thing rather than revs - could be wrong though!!
