Two beer surprises from the supermarket
Discussion
I drink quite a lot so have been trying to cut down my weekly units by drinking lower alcohol stuff but the problem is most of them taste very bad and watery after years of full strength stuff. In fact undrinkable. But I have been drinking bottles of Badger First Gold recently and after being unsure at first a few bottles later I think it is probably the best of this type of beer. Certainly when I relieve the stress of work by watering the garden at night it is fine to drink 2 bottles while doing it, and as 2 of these are only 1 bottle of 5% I feel better as well for it. 40 bottles later I am ready for bed. Only joking
Second was San Miguel out of a can. Now I have never been fond of it out of the bottle, completely unremarkable, but I found it had rather a better taste than the bottle. Perhaps my low expectations made it better than it was. I also tried Red Stripe as well and that was pretty good too.
It seems nowadays that the shelf space given to variety is getting less and less and Interbrew brands etc just are taking it over. Variety seems to only exist for bottles.
Anyone else got any good supermarket recommendations for lager or bitter?
Regards
Andy

I've got bottles of Black Sheep and St Peter's Organic Ale in the fridge, and very fine drinking they'll make a bit later on.
I actually prefer Hobgoblin in the bottle to the draught, as the increased fizz and crispness balances the inherent sweetness and depth very nicely.
Bottled Abbot Ale is always worth a punt, as is Old Speckled Hen.

I wonder if anyone on here will admit to trying it.
I tried Special Brew as a student. I even kept the first (and only) mouthful down...the rest quickly went down the sink!!! Need to be really desperate to drink that stuff, so god only knows what 'value' lager is like...deviant said:
Do you get Pure Blonde in the UK? Thats not to bad for a very light, low calorie, low alchohol lager. I dont really like it on tap but out of a bottle its refreshing and its light enough to be able to drink a few without giving yourself a headache.
I prefer Hahn Super Dry, but Pure Blonde isn't bad. I picked up some Asahi cheap the other day.
It was bloody brewed in the UK
I quite like Asahi..very dry tasting. Dont really like Hahn (or Tooheys, Crownies, VB, EB etc etc)
Oh oh a refreshing summer beer I can thoroughly reccomend is Montheiths Summer Ale: http://www.monteiths.co.nz/
