I know you can't get much "stuff" in a Griffith but my daughter had managed to get most of her belongings out of her uni digs. So off I trundled heading towards Leicester to do the end of term pick-up. I joined the A50 around Stone and headed East towards the M1. An enjoyable part of the journey not least because I'd left speed camera alley (A520) behind. As I approached the M1 in the outside lane there was an unpleasant "k-dunk" noise, I thought "that wasn't good!", quickly followed by another "k-dunk" as I slowed the awful truth became apparent... next to my left leg where the gearbox had been I now had a bag of spanners!!
OK enough of the how. This was back at the start of Easter and to put it bluntly I've been let down. A local gearbox company have sat on my gearbox and done nothing for the last 7 weeks. The problem is that the casing is cracked and they can't source another one. I'd have thought that coming off the SD1, they'd be 10 a penny but I'm sure that you'll put me right if I'm wrong.
Not knowing too much about these things and having been withought my car for 7 weeks I'm asking for advice. The car's a '92 4.0l which I understand had the LT77 box fitted. Is the gearbox on e-bay (link below) the one that I want or did TVR modify the box in any way?

I had the gearbox jam in fourth gear on the way to Le Mans in my 400SE one year 
The 400SE uses the same LT77 box so I, like you, assumed it came from an SD1 but when I gave it to a gearbox specialist & he stripped it & informed me the box was actually from a Jaguar XJ6. The Jag box uses larger bearings than the SD1 so I presume it is therefore stronger.
The LT77 box was used in various vehicles such as the SD1, Sherpa & Jaguar & I think Land Rover/Range Rover, the casing is the same but the the internals differed apparently.

Get in touch with Greenv8s on here for contact details, he had his gearbox rebuilt by ken tomlinson who was the original designer of the gearbox I believe. He does rebuilds to higher specs and should have the contacts/parts to get you back on the road asap.

The box is SD1 LT77 with TVR's own change mechanism fitted to the outside, its the 'h' / heavy duty version of the SD1 box which was fitted to the vitesse.
So any std LT77 case should suit, the guts of yours then gets passed over with new bearings and synchro cones I'd say
To break the case is pretty unusual I'd say had the box run out of oil?
