How do you become a moderator?

I can't vouch for this site, but I was asked to do so on another site I frequent...

Pies however, pies are compulsory.

To actually answer the question though, they are long standing and respected PHers who do it for the love of the site. Occasionally someone will volunteer and be accepted or we might email a few people asking if they fancy it (especially if there is a certain area that needs a bit more knowledge or manpower to look after)
