Ok, i went to start the car today, started fine, 5seconds later the "exhaust malfunction" light on the dashboard appears, and the car being to shake rather like a diesel but ALOT worse. This shake is very evident and the car seems to gain and loose revs and appears pop like a missfire. This shake only happens when the car is not moving.

I need to know why this happens and what the solution is.

Thanks

~Mick

Hi, the light you describe is the emissions warning light. Most common problem is going to be lambda sensor or temperature sensor. I've had the exact problem you're describing, had it fixed at an indy for less than £100, mine was the temperature sensor which was sending false readings to the ECU, which caused false readings to the lambda sensor. Never had the problem since. Neither of these are an expensive fix but you'll need to get the fault code read.

Mine shaked a bit also, but I wouldn't say excessively, it shook a bit, revs went up and down, when I tried revving it it was very rough and white smoke came out the exhaust, but since I've had the temp sensor changed, nothing at all, completely fine, its been a couple of weeks now. These problems seem bigger than they are. Best thing to do is get it scanned because the light can be for many reasons, but lambda sensors are the most common culprit. Maybe Tame Tech or Dr G will come help you soon

Might be a coil pack failure, running on 3 cylinders

Crystals have formed somewhere apparently and if i drive it, this will damage the catalyst so the car is undrivable says VW.

Is the light still on? Is it still shaking at idle? Is the car under warranty?
