CAN ANYONE TELL ME IF ITS NORMAL TO HEAR A MOTOR RUNNING NOISE WHEN IGNITION IS SWITCHED ON, IT SOUNDS LIKE ITS COMING FROM THE ENGINE BAY, AS SOON AS THE IGNITION IS TURNED ON THE NOISE STARTS AND KEEPS GOING TILL I SWITCH THE IGNITION OFF, COULD IT BE THE FUEL PUMP IF SO IS IT OK.
SORRY FOR ALL THESE QUESTIONS BUT I HAVE ONLY HAD THE CAR FOR 3 DAYS AND I AM TRYING TO GET IT SORTED OUT SO I CAN TAKE IT FOR A MOT AND GET IT ON THE ROAD WHERE IT BELONGS.
THANKS ANDREW.

*edit* Ignore vac pump idea saw car is S3 !!!

Sounds like the fuel pump but this should stop once
pressure is up ?
Could you isolate sound as to a side or top bottom of engine area ?

Yep fuel pump,Mine goes: Click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,
click,click...

Then stops, then i fire her up. Am glad it does this,as in some older british sporters you have to manually pump the pedals, a la interceptors(some 20 times i'm told).
Does sound odd though, and if you did not know what it was, then i guess you could turn off before it ends.

What would happen if it didn't end though?...
Bang?

Mmm,motors CAN die with buzzing & jamming as their swan song, may still be the pump then perhaps (my cooker hood has just done this, but is non lotus!).

I don't know enough Andrew, and mine is N/A so normal function of fuel pump/start-up noises may be different.
Hopefully someone clued up can help further.
Hope so,

PAUL C

Hi Andrew,

I've owned my 84 TE for 3 months now and I have the same thing; however I never thought of it as a problem; indeed the buzzing continues but I always assumed it was the fuel pump keeping pressure or something; so now you have me wondering as well

Andrew,

The fuel pumps on the carburetted cars is on constantly. It does not operate intermittently. It will switch on with the ignition key to provide fuel for startup and remain on until the ignition is switched off.

Rather than a buzzing, it's normal sound is more of a whirring one. While this may be a case of semantics, if indeed yours is buzzing, it indicates a problem. Possibly a bad fuel filter or the pump going out. Since filter replacement is the cheaper of the two, I'd replace that first and see if that corrects the issue. If the filter is bad, it is causing the pump to work harder than designed and will hasten it's demise. Hope this helps. Happy Motoring!...Jim'85TE

Andrew,

Possibly some of your confusion stems from the fact that there are very cars which have external fiel pumps these days, so the sound of one can be disconcerting to some.

With today's more prevelant fuel injected cars, the fuel pumps are increasingly located within the fuel tank itself which masks most of the noise an external one makes. Happy Motoring!...Jim'85TE

thanks for all your help jim, i had a 1380 clubman mini that had a electric fuel pump and it used to make a clicking sound and then stop when the fuel had got through, this sound is different thats why i was,nt sure if it was ok.

So if this clicking noise is the fuel pump (mine clicks for longer the longer you leave it, it's great!) then why does my car start easier if I pump the throttle a couple of times before i turn the key? Surely if the pump has got the fuel to pressure then turning the key would unleash a torrent of gas into the cylinders???

Good question that Andy,
I always pump four further times, then she starts. This means i never have to use the choke too.
Maybe the engine being cold is an issue,as the fuel pump would have no way of compensating for this?
Mine also clicks longer, the longer its been left, bit like the way a pet greets you...

Still no help to Andrew though, but
see Marc's does the same on his '84,
Jim's '85 whirrs,
Yet Andy's '88 'clicks' like my '83.
Mine and Andy's are N/A,but the other two are turbos.

Mean anything?
