Need help with exhaust volume!
Discussion
My car simply isnt loud enough and I need some ideas on where to go next. The car has recently been fitted with second hand wortec cat back pipes with remap and has the home airbox mod. Although these pipes produce a nice burble they seem barely louder than standard, particularly from inside the car. At first I assumed they had the quiet plate installed but was stunned to find they were already in they loud mode. My previous Ro was particularly fruity, the car thobbed and sounded like a NASCAR race engine. It growled like a beast with every gear change up or down a joy to behold. I know its difficult to replacate a lost love especially when you dont know the full origins of the previous cars exhaust but I reckon these pipes need to be alot louder (maybe twice!) to achieve the desired results. I prefer a throated roar to a boomy rumble and would appreciate any advice on the matter.
Is it a case of start again or can the existing arrangement be modified in any way. What difference if any would a K&N air filter make?

doesnt sound good. My wortec exhaust on is really bloomin loud as all my friends tell me, especially above 3000 revs and nailing it through a tunnel with the windows down is truly defeaning!
I'm sure the wortec or monkfish boys could sort you out, maybe sports cats, different headers or even a one off exhaust if you wanted, or walkinshaw do a 'v8 supercar' exhaust rated at 110 decibels apparently, but I prefer the look (and sound) wortec one.

Can I ask what arrangement you currently have on your car because this sounds like the kind of volume i'm used to.
Cheers Pool Digger
Pool Digger, get your headers done - long tube headers and sports cats - will increase the db and give you that raw throaty sound - the wortec one is quite "metallic" ie raspy, crackle, poppy type noise as apposed to a blap blap blap type rumble, so should give you exactly what you're after!
A new filter won't give you what you're after, but may free one HP or two at WOT.......
A new filter won't give you what you're after, but may free one HP or two at WOT.......
It's also very sensitive to how much gas is flowing through it. My old wortec went from loud to offensive when headers, cam and heads were fitted. I also think the quality of the noise is more important than the volume. My difilippo system is quieter and has a woofly rumble that makes it sounds like a Mclaren Mercedes SLR.
Try removing the back boxes.

So far as I know mines just Wortec's electronic switchable 2.5 inch cat back system, still has standard headers and cats, not 100% sure about the latter though. Monkfish or Wortec guys would know for sure.Cheers Pool Digger
The Wortec system has little bit more bark than walkinshaws 'performance exhaust', proven when I was at Brands BTCC parked a couple cars away from DE51 RED (Vauxhall's Bathurst S). My son revved mine up and Dougie revved the bathurst.
I think both are rated just over 90 something decibels, the wortec over 100 in loud mode, but not as high as the apparent 110 of the walkinshaw's supercar V8, but the standard VXR8 sounds like a mouse by comparison, you just cant hear it!
Maybe one or two guys on the forum who've driven behind me can comment on whether its noisy enough or not and of course everybodies view on 'loud' is different, but I know everyone hears me coming and turn around to see what the hell it is so it cant be that quiet

Bottom line is if you're not happy, I'm sure they could 'tweak' your current system or worst case sort you a new one of the noise level your looking for!

I assume that you don't have any middle boxes fitted. There is no way you could describe mine as quite - loud but not offensive woofle on tickover, to roar building up to a wail as it climbs through the revs. I just have the two end boxes fitted (6 litre Monaro) but there is no way you culd mistake it for standard.

Good luck selling it now!
Thanks for all the input so far, this certainly helping me form a picture and getting to where I want to be. First of all I dont want to go the route of Gas Mans straight through arrangement! I heard this in person at the Pheonix gathering last year and after expressing concerns that my (then) car was a touch on the neighbour unfriendly side, I quickly understood, that in comparison, mine was more "wake the neighbours" as opposed to "wake the dead!" (drag style)
It seems clear that sound, volume and tone are very subjective. One mans "Slade" is another mans "Slayer" so here goes for the exact summary of what I desire from me V8.
Start up - Should bark into life, turn heads within 5o yds to the point where I should be feeling smug and slightly illeagle. I may also need to squint a touch and pucker my lips in the "oooh" manor.
Tone - On the treble side - raucous - a touch harsh - more throaty roar than burble but not too stupid though (see GAS MAN).
In the car - Dont mind a bit of Drone - should certainly not need to wind down window - the whole thing must throb. - previous car passenger comment ("effing ell, just listen to that motor"
.
Police attraction - Certainly a bit of an issue - tended to feather the pedal wince and clench bum a bit in the first car when in and around police proximaty. An illeagle feeling would certainly be a necessary requirement as standard.
Throught the gears - Pure NASCAR - the whole point of owning a small block chevy and not an Audi A8! Big audible down changes with loads of bang on the over run.
There... almost complete, not easy summarising sound quality in words. Hope you can all relate one way or the other. I'm starting to think the previous car (now deceased) perhaps had headers modded as well. I'm keen to explore the Wormus "remove the back box theory"(I have no centre boxes). I would imagine this would require some tail pipe modification assuming the initial trial (back boxes removed!) proved satisfactory. Having just remapped courtesey of Mark at Rapid (superb job - transformed fuelling and performance of car) I am keen to initially explore options that would not require further remmaping.
Once again thanks for your input and for any additional gumph and contact details of helpfull sources you may have used in the past and are keen to recommend.
"Keep it coming!" Pool Digger.

Ok, some answers
Vez, I'm curious, tell me more.
Monkfish1, Definately in loud mode, wacking great holes in the spacers. I'm assuming headers will require further remapping due to altered gas flow?
He man
Oh dear, I really dont mean to dissapoint people or cause offence with my dowdy LS1 Holden, sorry Vauxhall. I assume you've owned, driven or heard a lot of big V8's as you sound like an authority on the subject!(might check out your profile in a minute) So I stand down to your better judgement. Maybe I should stick to the wifes Audi......Naah bored s***less just thinking about it.

Come and drive our demo car. Has Full Wortec system with headers with electric switching (ohhh and a cam too). If thats not loud enough, id get your hearing checked

I think they'll be dissapointed more than offended, after all a holden or monaro is about as offensive as the cars in my garage which are A) a volvo and B) an Audi (or two) - you want dowdy, pop round here and take any of my fleet out.Vez, I'm curious, tell me more.

Thing is, if I wanted something which sounded like a hot rod in the first place then I'd go and buy a hot rod so that the car went with the noise it created.
You on the other hand seem to be willing to spend an awful lot of money to get the noise of a very cheap (by which i mean a small or large block yank v8) it doesnt make sense to me, I'd have thought the whole point of owning a monaro/ holden etc. was to loon it around sideways shouting power out of the window and doing monster burnouts???.
They look good when I see the few round here doing that

Look Mate, its apersonal thing, I was brought up on AC/DC, Mad Max, Blown V8's and Drag Racing, If they did a three seater, I'd have bought a Ute. My death and danger desire is satisfied by an RG500, an RD400 and a 525KTM. I dont give a toss about drifting or mucho driving pursuits or being undertaken by some youth in a Burbury Subuaru. In fact I wrapped the last car around a lamp post thinking I could drive. I came very close to replacing it with a 68 350 Camaro, but no garage made classic car ownership unfeasible. I dont wish to spend large sums of money on anything if I can avoid it, in fact I just want my old car back. If you havent tried a Monaro yet your missing out. Try a loud a loud one, thats how I became hooked. If I was spicing up a 1.1 Nova, I could understand what your saying but this thing makes 414 hp and 441lb of torque. I only wish to let the monster live a bit!
