Been thinking about a business opportunity, im a professional detailer and have a pretty big unit i work from, its much bigger than i need for detailing really and thought about utilzing the extra space offering long term car storage maybe angled at the classic car market.

Does anyone use car storage services or involved in it as i would appreciate your advice.

PS im based just outside Aberdeen and dont know of any similar storage businesses up her.

Kind regards
Gav

Yeh thats about the cheapest ive found although the average seems to be around the £30/week mark with carcoon storage coming in at around £35/week on average.

My thoughts are that if i can get 10 cars on long term storage that would gross me £1200/month which more than covers my unit plus i have a very successful detailing business income also.

There must be a market in and around Aberdeen for this as this is a very wealthy area with an amazing amount of high end cars, plus the offshore market may be a good avenue with people not wanting to leave their cars outside for 2-3 weeks at a time.

Not everybody with a nice car has a garage im convinced it would be a success.

Something to bear in mind is what are the public transport links like or cost of taxis. Or would you be planning on collecting people and ferrying them back to your unit?

Yeh i had thought of that although i know from personal experience that i just dont feel comfortable with anuone driving my car no matter how much experience or insurance policies they have.

It would really depend on the client i suppose however i would encourage them to drop the car off, im only 5 minutes from Aberdeen airport and half an hour from city centre.

probably a bit too far out for me (even thought it's only 1/2 hour) as I'd be looking at 24 hour access and don't fancy taking taxis

It is definitely a good idea. One of my friends has a house and land out near Pitmedden including a fairly large field. He had the same idea to build a large shed and store cars. He got in touch with The Grampian Museum at Alford and they told him there is NOTHING like that up here!

You may well also need some form of insurance policy. I am not sure if the owners policies would cover them for the cars being in storage away from there houses.

My friend who looks after my TVR does storage for a living mainly caravans and motor holms on his ex-farm has around 350 vans motor homes boats and cars all in. His CCTV system cost him nearly 30k and his insurance in very pricy but he has a gold star storage facility. If you make some sort of disclaimer stating that it is owner’s responsibility for liability you could get round that and make them aware and sign it. You will really have to look in to it.

Ive been looking for something like this for a while now as i work abroad for 75% of the year and have 2 cars. I may well get in touch with you in 2 weeks when i next get home. Obviously insurance would be the biggest worry

Insurance for this could be interesting.

Depending on what cars are stored, you could easily end up with a collective value of over £1m.

Personally, from both your perspective and the customer's perspective, I would want a very robust system in place.

Also, if you'll excuse the tinfoil hattery, I would remove any references to your location in this thread. If I was storing a car, the last thing I'd want to do is store it in a well publicised place.

You raise a good point there and one that i have been thinking about, if i did go ahead with a storage business how would i advertise, obviously i need to make people aware that such a service exists but at the same time i dont want to advertise to much that it draws attention from the criminal element out there it would be a very fine balance.

Yeh if i went ahead with the storage business along side my detailing business i would look to source new premises, i dont and would not store any vehicles at my current location as having researched the issue a bit more i dont really think its viable in my present location.

I may have found the perfect building to set up the storage business, its big enough for around 40 cars but im just not sure theres a market for it.

How would i go about researching whether or not its something that may appeal to people.

I think there's definitely a market for it, but it's whether the numbers add up and make it worth while for you to carry it out. I know my brother and his partners (Polished Bliss) seriously considered storage for a while but in the end it wasnt worth their time and money due to the huge insurance/security costs and demands etc etc.

I know my brother is currently looking for somewhere to store his Impreza so you can add him to the list lol!

I'd also be interested. Cerb sometimes gets left at the airpark ! This would seem a much better option, and I'm sure I wouldn't be alone.

Being cynical anyone wanting to pinch a high end car from storage will probably know of an easier way to pinch car than from the storage and probably know of every storage facility within a vast distance anyway
