Yep. Bad synchronisation between various backup servers. It's getting pretty ridiculous now - several nights a week. And this has been going on for months too. Something needs to be done.

Fixed it!

It was nothing to do with the backup, which happens at about 2am (I've written some code which has fixed that problem) it was just one of the regular database servers decided to tie itself in knots.

I meant the servers that are meant to be in sync with each other and sometimes fail to be, meaning that different sessions serve up different 'latest posts' depending on which server you happen to get routed to.

Edit: And I'm not sure you have fixed it because it took a Ctrl-Refresh before I saw my post - it was still showing yours as the latest.

Yep, that's spot on, sorry I misunderstood you!

Part of the problem is that as the site grows we need to add more and more databases which exponentially increases the chance of a failure at any given moment. We had 3 databases when we started working here and we are now up to 7 so that is quite a bit growth.

We are testing what we hope will be the solution at the moment though, we are trialling a slightly different server which is currently performing roughly as fast as three of the old-style ones.

If it proves reliable then we will upgrade the old servers to this spec, allowing us to reduce the numbers and improve both reliability and performance.
