My Elise conked out on me at the lights tonight. It had been parked for about 4 hours and I had driven about half a mile (if that). I was waiting at a red light; as the lights changed and I lifted of the clutch, the car felt as if it had no power and it stalled. I tried to restart it and nothing. I left it a minute and it fired up and was alright after that.

It is a standard S1 apart from a Magnex exhaust, de-cat and Hurricane induction.

Has anyone else had this problem and does anyone have any ideas?

I had a similar thing today in my Noble, I was in traffic so the engine got quite warm, when I got to my parking space I stalled it and it did not want to start, after a short while it chugged and started, its usually the fuel vapourising from getting too hot

Its highly likely to be fuel or spark related. Next time it won't start, see if you can hear the fuel pump priming. If the fuel pump makes no noise when you turn the key, this narrows down the problem. If it does make a noise, your plugs should be getting wet when you try to crank the engine, if they're not that seems to point to an injector problem.

Assuming your fuel pump and injectors are doing their bit, then its an ignition problem, maybe the coil if the engine isn't even trying to fire, maybe the immobiliser or possibly linked to the ECU so it would be worth going through all your electrical connections to check nothing has come loose.

If the pump isn't priming it could be one of a few things. The pump itself seems to be pretty reliable which is good news as changing it is a big job. The immobiliser is linked to the fuel pump circuit as well but these seem to be pretty reliable. I'd say your most likley candidates are the MFRU unit, inertia switch or fuel pump fuse holder.

The MFRU's seem to have a habit of breaking up and either stop working or cause shorting at their connector. This can often manifest itself as an intermittent fault so is a strong possibility. The fuel pump fuse holder seems to have a habit of melting so give this a good luck. It could well cause the problems you describe. On the inertia switch, just check that its fully engaged and the wiring to it is good.

Good luck with it.

Hi,

My S1 did this, it was the distributor arm & cap.
