Slide Scanner Recommendation
Discussion
I'm asking on behalf of my FIL. Basically he has hundreds of slide from his days in the Merchant Navy in the 60s
He'd like to capture these on the computer so can print off - edit etc.
So I need some recommendations on which one to buy?
Given he has so many, one that scans one at a time is going to be no good, but other than that he's open to options. The more automated the better given his computer skills.
He's not sure on how much he wants to spend, as it depends on how much he needs to spend to get something decent IYSWIM. Not too much though as this will probably be a one use then gather dust exercise.
Failing that what about a postal service?
All tips gratefully received.

I have been using a borrowed Nikon Coolscan to scan over 1000 slides my Mum had.
I recomend it highly. Its not cheep to buy, a few hundred punds I think, hecne I have borrowed one from a friend. The nikon software that comes with it has done a fantastic job of correcting colour fade and digitally removing dirt and even the odd scratch from the slides. Given that many of these slides are over 40 years old, I am very impressed with the results.
I have not tried any of the cheaper options that are available so can not comment on how good the results are.

I was in much the same boat a couple of years ago and a fine upstanding member of the PH community by the name of chris (handle CVP) loaned me an excellent Minolta slide scanner, scanned 4 slides at a time to sequentially numbered files and the results were excellent.
It wasn't the fastest of processes, but I would heartily recommend the scanner.
