Made a start on the new patio tonight and dug up two of these fellas. Not sure what they were but I don't think they were too happy being disturbed. They were about four inches under the lawn.

What are they? TIA

Too big for a leather jacket, it looks like a beetle larvae of some description.

These fellas, maybe? If so, your in luck, pretty rare critters - harmless, just chew up rotting wood. (Alternatively, might be Martian Killer Beetles, & you're in BIG trouble...!)

I live in the sticks where there are lots of protected plants and suchlike so could be a good shout.

It's a scout from the planet Nexon.

Has your wife been behaving oddly recently?

Tried to put them back into the earth in various places but they really were not happy. After an hour or so they stopped moving so I put them on the bird table and within two minutes they were gone. A shame, but circle of life and all that. If they are the rare Stag Beetle it does say they don't relocate well.

RIP

I believe you have inadvertantly foiled an attempt to conquer the planet by a race of patio-dwelling brainsucking aliens.

Well done old bean.

It must have been one hell of a meal for the bird that took it.

Two of her fingernails are broken off and there's dirt or grit under them.
It looks like she's tried to claw her way through something.
Ray, get pictures of her teeth. We'll fax 'em for Missing Persons.
Let's do another.
She's got something in her throat.
When a body comes out of the water, lots of times there's leaves in the mouth.
What is that? Some kind of seed pod?
No, sir. That's a bug cocoon./Quote

Creepy. Don't post such horrid pictures on here again, por favour!
