There's a heavy "clunk" noise, sounds like its coming from the bottom of the steering wheel column. Happens when you go on the power or pull off when in gear, maybe as the engine is moving.

I've checked the top engine steady as suggested and its fine including the bracket. There's a similar steady off the gearbox and thats fine too. The engine block moves forward and back by hand fairly easy - is that normal?

Can anyone else suggest what else I should be looking at?

Many Thanks

Steve

Check the engine mounts, and also the steering rack mounts. There should be a little movement in the engine but not a vast amount if you have a top stabiliser attached.

Thanks. There is a top stabiliser in place but the top of the engine moves about 2 inches if I pull it back and forth.

Someone said subframe mounts but this noise happens specifically when you put power on and off. Has anyone used poly bushes for all the stabiliser bars - good idea or will all the bolts snap off?

If the top mount is working, there should be very little movement from the engine, certainly less than 2"! It's not unheard of for the studs to snap off on the side of the block. If you can get someone else to rock the engine it makes it much easier to check.
