Folks, I'm off on my jollies soon up to near Durness. Doing the journey in 2 parts so stopping off at Fort William then travelling from there to Durness. I've been up there before, last time was from Lochinver & we went up the A894 then A838.
Multimap reckons (from Inverness) the best way is A9 - B9176 - A836 - A838 (towards Laxford Bridge) - A838 approaching Durness from the West
I reckon it might be worth considering A9 - B9176 - A836 (towards Tongue) - A838 along North Coast approaching Durness from East.
My route is slightly longer (10 miles) so neither here nor there in terms of miles etc but would it be any quicker/better? Laxford Bridge to Durness on A838 can take ages with it being single track (is A836 any better?) & can be a bit dull.
Travelling with an 18 month old & my missus so not after anything too hair-raising.

I went from Tongue to Inverness on the A836 earlier this year. It's single track most of it's length and not particularly memorable, although maybe I was distracted because I broke a spring half way along it. I don't know the other route you mention but it sounds like there's not a lot in it?
I thought Laxford Bridge to Durness was epic, but I was in the car on my own and the roads were deserted.

The HH09 was originally supposed to go to Durness this year but because of the cape wrath challange on the same weekend we had to rellocate to Ullapool so very few will have been that far up this year yet.
I do hope there is not an on-shore wind blowing when you are up there as, the factory ship moored just out of harbour cleaning herring (at a guess) pen-and-inks! Apart from that, Ullapool is a nice place.

Not been up for a couple of years & having withdrawal symptoms - went to Skye in January but wasn't really struck if I'm honest.
I can understand you living up there - I would be up there like a shot if I could, even with an 18-month old. In fact, especially with an 18-month old. Nice little primary at Lochinver & good comprehensive at Ullapool - just need to work out how to carry on our business up there & of course convince the Mrs

It was last weekend 23rd/24th May, there were no boats in the bay and apart from the rain it was a very enjoyable weekend.
Oops! I was up there exactly a month earlier and stayed at The Harbour Lights Hotel. There was a big'ish ship moored just out of harbour with two smaller vessels moored alongside. I took them to be cleaning Herring by the smell wafting onshore. Glad that they were gone, and good to know you had a good time. Gassing Station | Roads | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
