Hi Guys,

I know I've read this on here somewhere, but I can't find it on the search.

Wedge came back from a run to the coast on Monday, with a rattling coming from the exhaust, it has been spitting lumps of wadding on the last couple of runs so knew where to look!

Took the centre section off today, and took an angle grinder to it, there was perhaps 10% of the original stuffing left and a perforated tube rolling about in the bottom...

2 questions... Anyone any idea where I can get hold of an 18" length of perforated tube stainless preferred, but original wasn't?

What do I stuff the silencer with before I mig it back up, I seem to remember loft insulation being discussed, but that's not right surely?

Brian (and a Red 350i) quite loud at the moment!

I think "carbuildersolutions" sell exhaust wadding as do one or two of the exhaust specialists.

Thanks guys...

looks like it's worth an attempt at repair rather than replace...

The thought had already crossed my mind to just empty the box and weld it up, however this vas vetoed by the normal passenger... AKA her indoors...

I'm going to miss showering Clio's and Corsa's with confetti though.

Rev - what did you use when you restuffed yours - rockwool?
If you don't restuff it, it will sound quite resonaty, that is very loud at certain revs. It isn't a good sound.

I used 2.5 inch non perforated stainless.. and stuffed the box with wire wool and also some on the fiberglass wool that was in there anyway .. not that it really mattered with a straight thru..

Did not sound that good - except on full throttle..

JP are making me a custom new box in s/s - slightly shorter, 3 inch in and out, perforated tube and fiberglass sound absorsation material.. £115 plus the vat.

I agree with Alan, i tried this with my last 400SE, ie opended the box of packing & replaced with straight through pipe.

Sounded horrible, very loud.. but not a good loud. These cars actually need some silencing, believe it or not!

Hi Brian

I notice you are in South Yorkshire so I would try Exhausts UK in Sheffield (near Meadowhall).
They are really nice helpful guys and made a S/S full system for my 400 for a very reasonable cost.
I am sure they will help with any bits you may need or guide you in the general direction.
Everyone keeps saying my exhaust sounds fantastic wherever I go btw

Sorry, haven't read the rest of the thread so this might be covered.

But WTF???

Wouldn't it be easier and probably cheaper to just buy a new silencer??

Well - yes and no,

As you can see from my picture the pipes in have to be in a very precise place - else they wont connect to the 2 headers..

JP have a jig so can make them..

Mine was £115 plus vat and delivery ..

A metre of perforated tube is about £15..

Welding that very thin stainless in tricky without a TIG though.. (mine was double skinned and very thin).

ok, hadn't realised it was in such a place with dual inlet.

That would make it a bit harder. Although you can easily buy bends and joins (in stainless) so I'm sure could be made to fit.

Guess if it was me a knackered silencer would just be an excuse to make it sound better/louder than it did before rather than trying to stay stock.

But alls good smile

Guys...

Thanks again for the replies... I now have a length of perforated pipe and a couple of bags of exhaust stuffing.

Where from... I'd already given the guys TD suggested a ring before I saw the post. exhaustsuk.com, I'd remembered them from being on Corporation St. in Sheffield and they had a good reputation then. Now in an industrial unit between Meadowhall and Sheffield Arena, brilliant service by Matt. I thought I would feel out of place without a corsa, clio etc... But judging by the exotic stuff parked around and the noises coming out of the workshop they know what they are doing.

M suggested going out and buying a new silencer, I probably would if these were off shelf items, the picture doesn't quite show the whole centre section which has a complex double 90 degree bend at the rear and several compound bends at the front to get round the gearbox. The best ones are jig built and the price of £132 + P&P looks excellent. Plus half the fun of driving a wedge is fixing it when bits wear out.

Now where is that DVD on MIG welding........ But seriously, the silencer body is single skin 3mm stainless. I've done repairs on the rest of the exhaust before, with a bit of patience should be easy enough....
