Daft question i know but.....

Would there be a problem in mixing oil brands?
Looked into the receipts given to me by previous owner and i can see they used Mobil Synthetic S 5W-40.
Been down to Halfords and they only have Mobile S 0w-40 or 10w-40, but there is a "Halfords own" synthetic 5W-40.

So, do i but Mobil Synthetic S 5W-40 online and pay a fortune (opie is £37 for 4 litres inc delivery), or can i use Halfords own brand?

I do actually have some Mobile 1 10W-40 in the garage still from my 1st Cerbera - but thats been sitting around for 5 years...and its the wrong rating.

AFAIK you can mix the different weights ie 10w 40 with 10w 60 as long as its still fully synthetic, same with semi, as long as you dont mix the types. There may be many opinions generated on this however, i can tell you i do the above and have been doing for the last 18 months. Maybe ask somebody like Opie Oils on here

I'd stick to the good stuff - either Silkolene Pro S or Motul 300v from Opie.

ETA: Generally there isn't a problem mixing oils and it's often stated on the container what you can mix the contents with.

Understood - I'm just doing a top up, not an oil change.
This was last done less than 2000 miles ago as part of a service with a reputable TVR garage - they used Mobil 1 Synthetic S 5W 40.
Have topped up with Mobil 1 Synthetic 0W 40 (1/2 litre) and will seek expert advice on the best oil to replace Mobil 1 with at next service.

Thanks for all the input guys.

There are lots of different opinions on oils, and in reality you can never prove that Brand X is better than Brand Y unless you do a proper labaratory test with 2 engines sat on a test bed running side by side for 20,000 miles.
Anyway.........For exactly the same reason as you had - ie you need some oil and can't find the brand that you want, I always use Shell Helix fully synthetic. It's a good oil and if you need a top up you can buy it from any Shell petrol station in the UK, and also when your abroad.

I wouldn't get to bothered by it if you're just topping up. As long as you're putting decent stuff in there i.e. a known brand then it will be fine. Far better that than not enough oil!
