Mercedes 6 cyl engines

Hello,

Does anyone know lots about Merc six cylinder engines, specifically the M103 and M104 variants.

As background I am looking to rebuild my 1989 300SL which is fitted with the 3.0 version of the M103 engine. I am sure I read that the M104 is based on an M103 block with a different head. Can anyone confirm this and comment on how difficult an upgrade it would be to change from 103 to 104 power ?
