diff or gearbox gone ?
Discussion
Hi Steve , no need to take out engine to get box out ,there is a mod to the chasis rail that allows it to be removed . firstly check all your driveshafts and UJ for slop makes sure nothing is loose also check hub nuts ,worse case it could be the diff or box . it would seem that the gearbox man (do a search) is the way to go or you could try and pick up a second hand box . plenty of info on the forum . simon
Yep should be able to do clutch without removing engine ,got lots of info off the usa site !! Steve as far as we can tell its a std 5 speed box of a ST 220 , some one was trying to sell a brand new box on ebay a short while back but there was some concern that the ratios were wrong . should be able to pick one up without to much problem , might be a good time to fit a LSD as these seem to be a weak point as well . will know a bit more over the winter as i plan to remove the box and get it rebuilt with a lsd .
The Gearbox is obsolete so finding a new one is hard but not impossible (don't go to ford as I think they are well expensive). I put both part number for the box on Noble Parts.
I would suggest if you can't find a new one then get a high milage old one from a breakers and then put all new internals in. Shot peening (not sure on spelling) is only worth doing on new gearing and not old/used.
Yes if a bar is removed from chassis (and then made re-fitable/removable) then the box can come out without the engine. Also change clutch at this point.

Well I would have said it depends on time constraints; like you could get the box, internals and Dif fitted before even giving the car to a garage. Or they do the removal and then the car sits there (risk of damage) possibly being charged storage.
When mine went everyone gave me all the same possibles and it was the dif. If its coming from that area i would say its 90% dif.

Steve , sounds more like the diff than box but as Art says make sure you check all the drivetrain it could be a cv joint , if it is the diff you could get one fitted but you will have to remove the box to do this and it makes sense to rebuild box as well as a new clutch while it all out . if you don,t mind the delay would probably be better to rebuild your box .
Worth considering your clutch slave if the box is out. My 2.5 was loosing clutch fluid for months and I knew it could only be the slave and its in the box! Got my local mechanic to cut the cross section out of chassis and re weld it back in. New clutch,Quaife LSD and slave fitted. Just under 3K. Noble specialists wanted 4K. Personally, I can't see the problem with re welding either, after all, the cross section is welded in the first place.

Steve, have just had my gearbox rebuilt by the gearbox man which included shot-peening and polishing. I also had the casing machined to accept gearbox cooling. Price was just in excess of £1000.steve
