As previously discussed here and elsewhere, "for sure" usage is decades old. It pre-dates even Bjorn Borg back in the 1970s, who used the term many times during various interviews at Wimbledon.... even back then I found it mildly annoying ... even moreso now ... that's certainly for sure!

I think there may well be some truth in that.

It was okay when the foreign drivers did it, but now we have native English speakers dropping it in wherever possible there has to be an element of farce, surely?

I dunno. I think it's just being a product of your environment.

When working in Munich a few years ago, in an office crammed with German, Swedish, Dutch, French, Turkish and Spanish workers all speaking English, they (and eventually me) adopted similar colloquialisms.

I just ended up saying some phrases just as they were, even though they weren't correct English.

It was originally an Italian thing. Dad has Italian friends and they drop it in every 5 seconds. Therefore I blame Ferrari.

As earlier posters have said it definitel pre dates Alain Prost saying it. I've seen interviews from the 70's with various drivers saying it.
