Guys,

I'm test driving a 99T Elise 111S on Friday at my local Lotus Dealer. Could you give me a few pointers on what to check on the car.

Thanks
C.

Check the tyres for uneven wear, this will show if the car has been tracked and the suspension has been knocked out of kilter. Also make sure the steering centers correctly and isn't pulling one way more than the other. The steering shouldn't feel dead when driven straight, again this indicates the wheels have been kerbed or pushed hard on a track, this will cost you at the next service.

Check the gear change, particularly between 1st and 2nd, it will always be 'notchy' but a poor gear change can indicate some boy racer abuse.

Also look for oil leaks from the crankshaft seals and smoke from the exhaust and listen for rattling, particulary from the bottom end. The suspension shouldn't grunt or squeak, although saying that hitting lumps & bumps at speed will always sound louder in a car like this with less soundproofing.

Hope the test drive goes well!
