Audi in Stratford must be struggling for business. Today they phoned me up to tell me my S4 needed a new front driveshaft at a total cost of £280 to which I simply replied "No" followed by "can't afford that, I'll do it myself".

10 minutes later they phoned me back to tell me they would do the labour half price and knock 10% off the part price coming out at £160...

Gone are the days when dealer labour charges and parts cost are non-negotiable then.

Also they gave me a 3.0TDi Quattro S-Line as a courtesy car, usually it's some stty A4 1.6.

One audi dealer quoted to replace my front discs and pads on an A6 Quattro 3.0tdi at £328. Another dealer was £430, 2 independants were £330. Parts alone £260 so the dealer price wasnt bad, plus free loan car and a pretty receptionist.

Audi Stratford phoned me on Wednesday to offer me nearly £7k discount on a used A8, down from £39k, 3000m only. Unfortunately it was the wrong colour and spec and not the A8L.

Business must be getting harder for them.

A 39 grand A8 still has a lot of depreciating to do in not a lot of time, I wouldn't stock one!

To be honest I knew the Driveshaft was on it's way out but was expecting a £500+ bill and was just burrying my head in the sand.

They phoned me this morning to tell me I could collect today and the bill for Driveshaft and Long Life service was only £278! More money knocked off because they couldn't sort out the ignition problem that it went in for.

To be honest with the prices and the courtesy car I cannot fault their service, very impressed.

Used car prices are definitely going up though. A mate just got the asking price for his £20k Merc. He was expecting to sell at £18k. Sold in 2 weeks as well.

TVR Sagaris prices have gone bananas in the past few months.

Is it me, is there generally and air of optimism about again?

I like to think so. Used market has seen an increase in demand and a reduction in stock resulting in higher prices, and the New market has recieved a small boost thanks to the scrappage scheme.

i was looking for a few weeks and the cars i was looking at were selling quickly, and as new ones were replacing them on autotrader they were going on at higher prices.. not sure if it's seasonal or just the dip at the start of theyear was unecisarily harsh

Its not seasonal or whatever, this has happened because the market has experienced great change in the past few months, never has anything like this happened before.

Appears to be even more exagerated with classic cars

Everything is negotiable whether times are good or bad. Before I have any work done on my car I ring around at least 5 dealers and a number of independents and then dangle them under the nose of my local dealer.

This recently resulted in my first service on the R8 going from £700 to £365!

Prices have always been depressed towards the end of the year when people dont want to walk around car lots and have other things for their money such as Christmas. then they always rise a little during spring when we have a few close bank holidays and better weather etc

just what we've not seen in the past is price adjustments quite as much as we have seen this year. so whilst i dont disagree that the changes are because of the economy issues, i dont think seasonal can be fully ruled out too.

Mrs XXPLOD's 320d is due a vehicle check, oil & filter, partculate filter and brake fluid. BMW dealers wanted on average £375. Dick Lovett have a price match policy and matched the independent quote of £234.
