lots of variables with insurance I've found. Whats good for mr A might be naff for mr B.
I started by going through the yellow pages 0800 numbers. Its a bit like banging your head against a wall with all the repetition but there are good deals I ended up with Autonet (Zenith), 0870 7704242 who got me+wife fully comped with protected no claims, 8000mpa and legal for about 500 quid.

Footman James do classic and modern insurance through Club Lotus. However I've been thinking about a classic Lotus and I've had some great quotes from....

I was with FJ this year who quoted me £360 on a 3000 mile limited mileage. It went up after my valuation which you need from CL. It went up again after my mileage quoter went upto 4500miles. It went up again after some modifications.
It's up for renewal in a few days. They say it's going to be nearer £600 with the mods I have.
Classicline are £345 for all my mods, 5000 miles a year, breakdown cover and parked on a driveway. Iam 32 years young!!

Hope this helps,

I was quoted £409 for my renewal by Footman and James for 4500 miles. Classicline quoted me £309 for 3000 miles but would not allow me to keep the car on the driveway. I phoned F & J again, reduced the mileage to 3000 and told them what Classicline had quoted and they dropped it to £334 and will allow me to park it on the drive. I am 32 years old and the beauty of classic car insurance is that you do not use your no claims bonus and can therefore keep it for your daily transport. My car is 10 years old now, but even last year they gave me modern classic insurance which costs slightly more but still keeps the no claims bonus free to be used on another vehicle.

Classiline has just changed their policy to now insure people who keep their car parked on the drive.
Incidentally, with all the mods I listed bar one, the premium would have been £295 fully comp. With the extra 50BHP it's gone up by exactly £50. How scientific! Still much cheaper than FJ and you don't need a CL valuation a agree a value.

cheers,

Footman James quoted me over £1000. 4k per year miles fully comp, no no-claims and car garaged. It was actually well over the £1000 mark but I was so shocked I didn't take it in. They recommended I take the quote from Carol Nash, £282 FC, 4k miles.
Many thanks to all respondees. Goes to show, insurance is a minefield.

Me,
Male,31yrs '83 S3,garaged,(paying extra too for my turbo body add ons), £330 fully comp with no mileage limit. Footman james.
When your car is twenty,FJ drop the mileage limit, mine was on 3K miles for £427,when she was twenty last year it automatically dropped to £330 and unlimited.
Am selling now,and intend to shop around for next one, have asked the question here too,and have had good things said about classicline.
The main pull for me is not having to join club lotus, send them photos etc every two years (to
get a saddeningly low agreed valuation),to pass on to FJ. This is a pain, and apparently classicline do not do this - you just insure an agreed value.

Can see i'm going to have to give Carole nash a try.... I went with FJ to cover my '91 Elan thought I had got a bargain @ £315 for 4500miles a year with recovery, agreed value etc, as you say joining Club Lotus, pics etc is a pain and if CaroleNash can do it cheaper i'll be well pleased!

I think the deal Footman James have got with Club Lotus for the agreed valuation forms is a scam! Thats why I stopped using them as my insurers plus I did not re-new by Club membership. I used to get my valuation done by Ryland Lotus in Birmingham (that was) when they MoT'ed my car - in other words by a factory approved Lotus dealer who had inspected the car physically on ramps. Footman James refused to accept their valuation instead insisting on a Club value form from someone who did not know the car and only saw it from a photo?! Bloody rip-off the charge for that!

Interested few days.
I have just renewed my insurance. Previously with FJ last year with a premium of £360 on a 3K limit. It went up three times for various reasons. This year it's around £660 with the mods i have. Rang classicline and they were £295 for all mods apart from one. With this mod added this went upto £345 based on 5K limit and parked on driveway.
I also read some small print on my FJ renewal form. For some reason this year has a clause which states that if it is stolen between the hours of 10PM and 6AM and it's not garaged then the insurance will be void.
Also rang Carolnash yesterday. Without any of my mods, just bog standard car on a 4K limit it would have been £440 and £620 for 6K limit. They added that they would have to speak to their underwriter on Monday to see if thet could cover me at all with any of the mods. I obviously went with classicline which ended up cheaper than last year.

Cheers,

In 2002 it was in certain postcodes.
In 2003 it was in all postcodes.
I even have to state if the car is in my parents garage (six miles away) rather than in mine.
This is on a 20 yr old car on FJ classic policy, don't know if it's the same on the newer cars with limited mile policies, but i'd guess so.

The good thing about classicline is that recently they have changed their policy to cover cars without a garage. This has only happened over the last few months. Also you don't need to join CL and get a valuation from them.
Lastly, their policy does have a clause about your vehicle being stolen during the hours of 10PM and 6AM. You excess goes goes from £100 to £250 and that's it.
To me this is by far the best policy I've had. Let's just hope they have a good pay out record.

Cheers,

Mustard, Before my car was 20 yrs old,it was what footman james call 'collector' policy. This is their standard 'classic' policy for cars younger than 20.
Last year she turned 20. At the same time i was given unlimited miles, but also the garage after 10pm limitation in ALL post codes. Garaging at my folks also had to be both AGREED and STATED in my policy too, or i would not be covered when staying there.
As my car is 20,and now in their 'classic' status,i assume your insurance,as you have read it is probably right,as its a different type of policy.

Superdave, The insurance without a garage is good to know. I lost the sale of my car recently as the buyer could not insure without one (in safe postcode). Wish i'd have known this then. Too late now
