Help! Funny smell in the cockpit this morning..
Discussion
OK, so I know its not really a cockpit, but it sounds like an aircraft..
Hooning along the A61 towards the motorway this morning, I had to pull in behind a lorry and thought he's got problems; foul burning smell had worked its way to me.. Lo and behold, 40 miles later, it was still there, so the problem if there is one, lies with the S. Car is performing normally, i.e. still cuts out at junctions once in a while
temp and oil gauges are fine, doesn't smell or feel like brakes or clutch. Electrics seem ok too and the heater is as good as it ever was so I'm thinking its not ran out of water but had a gaugue failure at the same time.
Don't appear to be any once cute bunnies welded to the exhaust, so thats me stumped until I can have a good look...
Any ideas chaps?

seriously mate, check the connector block under the steering column. Its a chock block style connector and check you can pull it apart ok. I had a burning smell for a while and then my electrics all cut out when evening whilst travelling on a country road with no street lights
found the block to have melted over time and hence the failure. I couldnt pull the block apart to remove it where it had melted.
Have a good look under there, make sur ethe block comes apart ok and look for signs of any excess heat down there.

Thanks, good point.. I'll take a wander out and stick my nose under it at lunchtime.. Hopefully I'll make the 40 odd miles home tonight.. If thats the suspect [art, don't suppose you remember how difficult it was to source? Getting a rare as hen's teeth feeling..
Oh, shoes and boxers both ok

Opened up the steering column and no smell coming from there, but it seemed to be from the passenger footwell. Dropped the fuse box/relay board and think I've found the problem, have never seen a relay spark and smoke so much before. Probably explains why the lights failed on the M1 on the way home..
