V8 or Speed 6 for a cerbera virgin????? Help
Discussion
Ok.. Craved for a tvr for years and being I`ve now hit mid 30`s I think - A- I can afford it.. B- Am probably mature enough not to kill myself.. C- can appreciate it properly...
Now I do have 2 small ish nippers so being the selfless type would like to include them in the experiance now and again, so it is for this reason I have opted for the cerb..
Now the Q?? Im asking is which engine would you guys reccomend for a TVR Virgin.. I kind of want reliability as not to ruin the first ownership experiance, but also dont want to feel like Im loosing out on something!!
So AJP V8 or Speed 6 ?????
Thanks
Geraint

That's how I was 4 years ago. Had wanted one for years and finally said 'sod it'!
I'm afraid I always thought of the S6 as the lesser model and the V8 as the real deal. I thought if I didn't get a V8 I'd always want one. So I got a nice 4.2 and it was great - the one I got did give me loads of trouble though.
Just after I'd got it all sorted someone caused me to crash into them and their insurance bought me another one, a 4.5 this time. And I'm so glad!
I'm pleased I went for a V8; The 4.5 is excellent, although I suspect that a decent 4.2 would be so similar so as to be just as good.
This is not to 'dis' the Speed 6 too much, but I just think 8 pots are better than 6!
My motto is - if you think you'll regret not doing something, then do it quick!
Andy.

As above
I never even considered the Speed 6, toyed with the idea of a 4.2 then bought what I actually wanted, the 4.5. I've seen some beautiful, powerful, drivable Speed6 and AJP 4.2 cars. Just happens I wanted the biggest, fattest, fastest engine option. Not right for everyone but right fo me.
The only problems I've had with my car to date have been age related, not type related.

I was new to TVRs, had a mate with a Chimera, but I wanted 4 seats as I have a 3.5 yr old boy and a nearly 2 yr old daughter. Was initially looking at Tuscans, but realised that they just wouldn't get used much (have 3 motorbikes that were being used less and less due to time constraints, but htey haven't even had a look in since I bought the Cerb
), but then looked at Cerb's so I could use it as a "weekend car" that I could use to take the family out, but also have LOTS of fun when on my own too....
I looked on this forum, tried to decide between S6 and AJP V8 - lots of threads on this so use the search function. Advice generally seemed to have been that the original factory spec was that the S6's were a bit "softer", with 16" wheels and softer suspension to give a more compliant ride. However, lots come with 18" wheels or aftermarket suspension by now......
Best advice seems to be to buy on condition and history rather than age. I looked for ages, used one of the inpection services to help my peace of mind (I used Rob Ingleby Find A Sportcar, others seem to recommend James Aggar, others available, etc etc).
My kids LOVE the car; tend to fall asleep on longer journeys, and it gives me great pleasure to pull up into the child and parent spaces, get lots of evil glares, then get the whole family out!!!!
BTW - Get the Recaro Start child seat - only one that really fits and is well recommended by me, or the Recaro Impact Start cushion to pin slightly older kids into the bucket seats.
Do it and enjoy

I was also in the same position a few months ago
Originally wanted a 4.5 V8 but the tes drive put me off. Heavy clutch and coughing and splurtering around town. Does not seem to like low revs and "normal driving". When you are on it, its great, but not during normal conditions.
Went to see a Speed 6 - very cautious due to the engine rebuild stories. Lovely to drive, much more docile around town and then a beast when you open it up. Actually has more torque than the 4.2 and only 10HP short. Get oe that has been rebuilt recently and you will have no problems
Good luck

Interesting - got a rolling road graph of that?I don't think there's any issues now with the speed 6 is there? Aren't all the early problems sorted now? Certainly the later Sags, tuscans etc are all running fine.
Simple question to ask yourself first.
Are you going to drive flat out all the time?
NO?
Get the best condition one you can find!
THEY ARE ALL SUPERB!!
The way it drives and rides is more important than the badge on the back!
Easy for me to say.
But I would love to drive an S6 to see if there is any real-world difference!
Re-mapped my 4.5 poodles about at 1200RPM and has no problems around town.
WARNING - It don't care how old you are, it will bite your head off if you don't respect it!

As a new S6 owner the best advise i can give is to go out and drive them both. I think a well looked after S6 is a great engine, mine had a full rebuild by Jason Clegg at STR8-6 before i bought it and is an absolute jem.
If you beleive everything on the forums S6 engine cars are only fit for Chevy engine transplants. i'm not sure how many AJP8 cars were produced versus S6 cars suffice to say there are more AJP8 cars, as a result there is a bias towards those cars on this forum.
My car has got 16 inch alloys, I prefer the look of the 18 inch spiders but in reallity the 16's give it a much better ride as the roads where i live (Sheffield) are terrible.
The AJP8 will be quicker, but in the real world there is proably little difference unless your doing regaulr track days.

At the end of the day, the difference will be down to the size of your gonads more than how many horses you are packing. All great cars
But the 4.5 will always win the pub Top Trumps
