The title says it all apart the cobwebs are in the paint work.

Any idea what causes this and how to get rid of them?

just a guess but do you only wash the car with 1 bucket and a sponge method? follwed to dry by a chamois? do all this in a circular motion?

can you post some pics up? i'm guessing this is what's more commonly refered to as swirling and is a result of the above washing method.

has that etched through to the primer?

looks like fallout or bird lime eating into the paint to me.

Doesn't feel like it has gone thru the paint to primer but it is bloody weird, especially to have it on two seperate cars.

classic case of some retard throwing eggs at the car.the damage they cause on impact is bad and usually means painting the panel...

They are distinctive egg breakage marks and would of gone through the paint sorry to say.

I have had them "flatted and polished and knew I would have to get the side painted but wanted to know what had caused it.

Commonly seen after halloween with the 'trick of treat' nonsense. Always amazed me how much damage eggs can cause.
Incidentally, repair usually involves repainting the panel & for bonnet, roof or boot that's the whole panel. So that's a nice offence of Criminal Damage.
