I have an aco with Alliance & Leicester, soon to be Santander nad Barclays.

I transfered by internet banking £500 from A & L to Barlcays on Wednesday lunchtime. By end of business Wednesday the funds had left my A&L account but had not been credited to Barclays.

Thursday morning as the funds had still not be credited to my Barclays account balance or even the statement I transfered another £1.11 from A&L to Barclays. It appeared within the hour on the Barclays statement.

Is there some unwritten rule that amounts over a certain level take 3 days to arrive and those under a certain level are immediate. Only details ive found is £10,000 takes 3 days. Or is it Barlcays being shifty with my money. I hasten to add I got charged £8 for non payment of a standing order becuase the money was not available which I will be getting refunded back to me or they can take their business elsewhere.

If both banks support the faster clearing system, it should have been pretty rapid. A&L might have delayed the first payment to a new payee (regardless of the fact that it is you) for "security.

Barclays has instant clearing from one Barclays account to another. But the first time my wife sent me some money intra-Barclays, it took three days to clear due to "security".

i have ann account with the co-operative bank. they are still trialling the faster payment system,theirs only works up to £170 .anything over that still takes 3 days or so. maybe it is a similar system with your bank.call them up and ask

You won't get your money back for the charge of £8. One of the wonders of the office of fair trading investigations into unfair charges was a new scheme called 'treating customers fairly'. Barclays have used this as a way of making things black and white so that if the bank was at fault you get your money back. If it wasn't at fault you don't no matter how much you whinge and threaten to take your money elsewhere.

From what you've said I cannot see what barclays has done wrong.

Can't help on the faster payments though

Nationwide only offers Faster Payments on amounts of £10 or less, which may explain why it is only processing 1% of transfers through the system. The Alliance & Leicester, Lloyds and Halifax also have thresholds considerably less than the industry limit of £10,000.
Might be something to do with that.
