where to pick up cheap bikes up?
Discussion
I am looking for a cheap (to buy) bike to do excerise on. My local tip place wont sell those many perfectly working bikes for H&S reason.
I have downhill/freeride bike but its abousetly pig to ride on anything but on DH course.
Cant get on the freerecycle. too many undesirables on there. diffcult to register too.
Gumtree. they dont offer up that much.
Any idea where i can pick up a cheap bike apart from nicking it from other people !!!
(joke)
I even will accept the bike frame or in bits. as long the frame itself isnt cracked or bent way out of shape.

Went through this recently.
Wanted a cheap bike (racing) to get my gf in to cycling.
Ebay - Old raleighs going for mad money, old knackers going for over £50, nothing at all that was usable and sensible price.
Gumtree - Lots of halfords chinky mountain bikes for more than you can buy them for new, nothing you would want to ride though.
Freecycle - Seriously the saddest most awkward group of individuals in the world. Also no bikes.
YACF - If you think PHers are opinionated you should join for a laugh. No cheap bikes.
Second hand shops - Crap mountain bikes for £50 upwards.
I then went round a few bike shops, the first had a ropey old peugeot circa 85 vintage, nothing special and £50 but was the best so far! The next shop had a gorgeous looking bike that I hadn't even seen, I just asked "have you got any cheap used racing bikes? Down comes this beauty!
Vitus carbon frame.
Campag group set (only cheap but 9 speed so all easily upgradable to 10)
Mavic wheels on campag hubs.
The frame was fairly freshly repainted by a local frame builder.
Cost?.........
£110. You can't buy the groupset for that. But it was a lucky find, my advice however is avoid the places that "should" be cheap and just go round all the local bike shops, you may just find a bargain!

Ebay is the easiest one, you're covered (if you use pay pal) upto £500, i've bought various bits off there and mates have bought bikes with no problems.
Southern downhill is quite good but dh bikes mainly.
I have found dumped bikes before, but that requires luck, and report it to the police etc see if its stolen!
A mate got a reasonable one from the dump, if you don't buy it from them, then they shouldn't have much to worry about H&S wise, maybe explain you're going to service it? although they might be a jobsworth.
Best place to get them is off mates, more than likely will give you something for beer money, one of your mates is bound to have an old bike somewhere perhaps at their parents house or something.
On a different note though, i've punctured my hardtail but can't be arsed to fix it so have been using my DH/freeride rig for my weekly road exercise. I'm pretty sure that even though its much harder to use i'm better off for it (ruining the tyres though), i must burn more calories riding the same route.. maybe!

Ebay's a bit of a nightmare at the mo IMHO. I guess as everyone tries to save money there's more of a second-hand market and prices are way up. Trying to pick up a cheap helment cam and they're going to for than new prices.
Have a look on the classified section of Bikeradar and Pinkbike (just remember to switch to the european section) lots of wierd and wonderfull bikes going and it seems to be if it's not an 08' or '09 model it's going for peanuts.

Just steal it from the dump... It's not like they're going to come after you for a bike they're probably going to throw away anyway...

Also if you go on here http://www.londonfgss.com/forum6.html you may find a bargain.
to get really lucky, you have to chase up all the ads in hte free papers, the papers like loot and the free ads that read "old gents racer for sale £15" because there are often stories of them turning out to be old colnago frames dripping with super record components which some little old lady found in the shed long after her husband has passsed away and doesnt know the value of it... if you ever find that colnago, could you really pay £15 and walk away with it?!?!.... thats the day i find out if i have a conscience....
MTB based, but worth a look..
