contacting an old owner...should i?
Discussion
i was looking through the service history of my E21 and realised something quite special....there was an owner who got the car in 1984 and his name was still on the service sheets as a contact until 2001. the service history is dry up until it's MOT just before I got the car in 2008, so it's possible he owned it past 2001. but even so, thats 16-17years which i think is quite special. his address has always remained the same and i was wondering whether to write a letter to him to tell him how the car has been doing? i can't see any harm...? surely he wouldn't mind knowing if he owned it for this long...??
cheers

Cant see any harm in it- I've done it myself to a few previous owners of the Aston. Never had any replies mind, but I wrote a nice letter to them on nice paper, saying that I am now looking after it, and did they have any memories/photos which I could see? It adds to the history etc...

Do it!
On both my E28 & W124 both the previous owers who had the cars since new were very helpful and pleased to know the cars had gone to a good home, sending me old MOTs, Service invoices etc, even the original Bill of sale & roof bars on the W124!
love your E28!! Oh and your E34. Oh did i forget the E39 i also love that? What about the E30 cab as well! I'm jealous of you!! i have sent a letter in the post, typed up. didn't include a picture but said if he would like one (or even if he wanted to see the car...since his address is a mere 20mins drive from here!) he is more than welcome. i made myself pretty genuine by going through some of the history...saying i saw you owned it from '84 and still had it in 2001...it's had a respray at some point...was it you? etc etc. told him some of the major work that's been done (5-speed box, uprated carburettor, uprated suspension kit, some welding and so on). i said if you don't wish to be contacted tben just disregard the letter. gave him my mobile number and address. according to the last owner...the guy passed it on to a relative in 2001 as he could no longer drive it because he was disabled and needed wheel chair etc, then it was stored for a while by them, then sold. and now i have it

I like that - your car must have been well loved by that owner.
Not quite the same, however my E24 has been lived in a 8 mile radius of where I am since just after first registration in 1989; in fact the (independent) garage which is closest to me, when I booked the car in to get it back on the road, it turned out they knew the car. One of the previous owners had put it there for about 5-6 years in the 1990s for servicing. The previous owner had sold it (to a friend of mine) in 2001, replacing it with an E31, which he's only just sold. At some point I'd like to get in touch, perhaps when the car is marginally less scruffy than it is at the moment! Since 1990, I'm the fourth owner of the car - and the youngest at eighteen months. I don't think I'll ever sell it.
