anyone wanting things like tiger prawns, scalop meat, etc....

should go down to the vietnam supermarket near columbia road.

It is frozen (but unless you get it fresh from billingsgate and no flash frozen are you going to notic) but tiger prawns at £8 a kilo and scalop meat (small cuts) at £8 a kg is good and it doesnt stop there, cuttle fish and everything else you can think of starts at £3 per 500g and goes upwards to £30 for a big bag of exoitc crabs.

Also the stinkfruit is available there... frozen of course to hold in the smell.

Thought you lot might like to know

Will be going back there once the freezer is empty.

E2, or E13?

Neither is exactly a walk for me, but £8 a kilo is cheap. Almost worryingly so, in fact.

Thanks muchly! thumbup

Truth be told, though a pleasant enough walk on my own, I'd have to take a small wheelbarrow full of nappies, food, and stuffed toys to do that at present. But, we do outnumber him on alternate days so I'll try to get there next week.

I go to Wing Yip in Croydon. This isn't quite as cheap as it once was, but any commodities bought in bulk are a quarter of the price of supermarkets. It's also worth a gawp at the freezer section for the ingredients you would never have imagined anyone ate.

As a student I lived on the 3-minute noodles from the local Oriental supermarket. At the time these cost 25p a packet, and curiously enough they still do.

I buy Dim Sum and Samosas by the kilo for pennies. Same stuff as I used to pay 100 quid for.

Loon Fung ROCKS.

christ i think I've been to all of the supermarkets listed here. Billingsgate is still the best for sense of adventure and occaision...nothing better than coming home with a haul at 7am on your day off, straight round to a mates house, into an iced sink, crash out, then crack open the wine at lunch at start cooking all afternoon.

I'd be interested to know how much the really huge prawns are. I've eaten all mine and am craving more...

About a tenner for a ten pound bag - they're MONSTERS at least six inches long.
