just looking to pick the groups brains really on this one. Have started a couple of threads over the past couple of years on this topic too, but nothing really came of them.
Right, down to it..........
I have been noticing a slight knocking in the steering of my 54 plate 111R, with 20k on the clock. Over the last 2 services, and a visit to the dealers, I have asked them to investigate, but nothing was found. It was most apparent when approaching a set of lights/roundabout with that increased grip coating. I would hear and feel a slight knocking from the steering.
Having just completed a Driver Development Program day at Prodrive's track the noise has become more noticable. Just spent some time trying to track it down further, but no luck. It is very apparent when stationery, and turning 1/2 to 1 turn of lock back and forth. It feels like every tooth of the rack is felt. If I repeat the exercise but turning slowly I feel/hear nothing. Have recently changed my pads, and whilst the wheels were off I gave it a good look, but again nothing was apparent.
Some people have reported problems with the racks, is this wide spread?

Cheers

PS report on the Prodrive day to follow.

Could be worn ball-joints, toe-links or the rack on it's way out, or even just the pads knocking in the calipers, especially if you're noticing it under braking.

I had a very slight knocking a couple of years ago which i could feel through the steering wheel (54 plate exige). i could feel this on very smooth road surfaces but not so much on rough surfaces. my local main stealer thought it was the suspension and replaced them but it was still there after i picked it up.
I took it to westover and Andy Bennett (sadly hes no longer with them) took it for a quick drive and said it was not that bad but the rack was on the way out, said he would see what he could do and managed to get it done under warranty at the time. The car had about 12K miles on it when this happened so maybe yours is also on the way out being 20K?
Take it to someone who knows what they are dealing with and get them to check it out would be my advice.

It sounds as though it's the steering rack. Approx £300 for a reconditioned rack, £500 for an OE rack, fitted, IIRC.
