sounds to me like you need some gas in the refridgerant circuit. you should be able to get it done by a specialist for less than £100.

Also on this note, if the coolant level is low, does this automatically shut off the compressor?

silly question, but you know the air con isnt on permanently? pushing the switch turns it into a normal heater that blows air around!

One way is that the amber light in the centre of the switch lights up when the a/c compressor is operating.

You also need to check that the link rod from the heater control switch to the heater valve is actually closing off the flow through the heater matrix. They can get a bit stiff over time and it leaves the heater matrix with hot water still flowing through it which naturally, the AC can't overcome.

Also, check if you can hear the compressor clutching in and out with the amber light on. There is a separate fuse for the clutch relay, I believe which can prevent the a/c from clutching in despite everything else working.

Finally, as others have said, there is a low-side pressure switch which will stop the a/c engaging if there is not enough pressure in the system - you need the system fully recharged.

does the light still come on if its run out of gas?

Look into the sight glass on top of the dryer unit if you can see fluid moving in there you are not out of gas, perhaps a little low(hopefully)
If it needs a fill go to any garage with an air con vac and charger telll him to put back 950g of gas. (the factory say 1KG but I found 950g worked better)
Jobs a carrot.

You probably wont find out for a week, and they will already have your money, My bloke sprayed stuff on the bits that goes green when it finds a leak.

Halfrauds do DIY kits, I cant see how they work though as it's illigal to dump refrigerant into the atmosphere.

Their kits are just top up kits.
Dont waste your money and get the fill valve checked as these all to often leak very slightly but your system
drains over a period of a few days.

How much did they put in?, if it was brimmed it will over pressure and start turning itself off.

10% reduction in air temperature coming out of the vents, I think.

Wow. questions questions

They suck all the gas out into their machine and it gets weighed, I told them what should be in there as their books dont tell them, if it is not too low (he said less than 750 ish) then thats it, all ok and no charge. If it is lower then it gets pumped full to the correct weight and job done.
I must admit, although it is automated, they were damn good for a Kwik fit depot, well impressed.

And now the important bit.........wait for it........it is cooler
