From when we had a big aircraft carrier. Some nice machinery there (Phantom, Buccaneer, Gannet, Wessex) but if Top Gun was gay, this is sporting a bushy mustache, crotchless leather hotpants and a pink biker jacket.

good find, besides a couple of the planes looking a bit long in the tooth it could have been filmed yesterday!

ETA I take that back, diving to drop a bomb on target!! no laser guided buggers from 20,000 feet in those days!

Question for Eric - does that F4 have an extra-long nose-wheel leg?

It will be an F-4K and for Royal Navy carrier catapult operations it will be using an extended nose leg.

The RN Phantoms were designated F4K by McDD (FG1 by the RN). They haf an extended nosewheel leg (as well as a slatted taileron IIRC) effectively to give the wing a greater AoA for 'low wind over the deck' T/O's.

In 1978 the Ark Royal was pensioned off and around 1979 the F4K's entered RAF service at Leuchars with the Tremblers (111 (F) Sqn) and the Fighting Cocks (43(F) Sqn).

Bought the nice Fujimi 1/72 model kit of the FG1 on Saturday. I've been waiting to get my hands on one of these for years. They haven't been available in the UK for a long, long time.

There was a good graphic that went with this story in the Sunday Times, I cannot find it though.

this is a good read on the subject of the buccaneers and phantoms of the Ark.

A bit like the vulcan mission book.

I have posted some pictures in the past over on the Scale Models forum. However, I think that forum is a bit of a PH backwater and mainly concentrates on die cast cars and RC helicopters/dune buggies etc.

Here's a couple to keep you going.

Airfix 1/72 Avro Anson Mk.I

Airfix 1/72 Westland Lysander

That's my cutting mat. They are definitely not CGI models.

Thanks.

I look on myself as a fairly average modeller (you should see the quality of some of the stuff displayed at my local club).

Here's yet another Airfix oldie - their 1/72 Brewster Buffalo in the colours worn when based in Singapore in 1941.

When I was making modesl as a boy, I always had a problem with the qwuality of the kits- the wings, for example never fitted properly. On the lancaster model for example they would be together at the wing root, but at the wing tip both upper and lower surfaces would be seperate (and hence the airlerons would fall out). No amount of glue/rubber bands during construction would fix it.

have they improved over time?

Fujimi F4's are very good models. Built a few of those.

In addition to the slatted tailplane and extended nose wheel, I think the FG1 had a slightly less complex radar, hence it being designated FG1 as opposed to FGR2. I seem to remember reading somewhere and FG1 could get airborne quicker as the radar didn't take as long to fire up. I think the FG1 had a slightly different version of the Spey, from memory they had the Spey 202 as opposed to the FGR2's 201.

The Bucc seems to be launched in a 'wheelie' position - is this right ?
