Over the last couple of days I have noticed that my wedge runs quite roughly for the first ten mins and the car vibrates and shakes more than usual for that period too.

Say I am at a junction .... dip the clutch and give the usual little gas, the revs drop til nearly cut out but then picks up again.

Also, say I am in 4th and give a bit of welly, there is about a one sec delay and jolt before any response. Come to think of it, there seems to be more pops and bangs on over run recently.

Does anyone recognise these symptoms and are there any simple checks or minor tasks to carry out for a mechanical novice such as myself ?

After ten minutes, no issue at all.

Thanks

If the problem resolves itself after 10 mins then it may be a faulty warm up regulator (bit like an automatic choke) mounted on the front of the drivers side cylinder head with a 'U' shaped pipe to the plenum and another to the throttle body.
It has a disc inside that rotates to allow extra air into the engine when cold and as the engine warms up it slowly closes, it operates off a bi-metal strip and and a timer.
It may be non operational or the disc may be sticking, try removing one of the pipes and giving the internals a spray with WD40 and also check the Lucar wire connector is ok.
Hope that helps

My 390 had similar start up symptom of rough idle/running due to overfuelling. If you haven't already you might want to disconnect the cold start injector plug to see if that helps (as it does deliver a fair amount of fuel on warm up which isn't really required in UK temperatures.

The cold start injector can sometimes weep, so it might be an idea to unscrew the injector and pressurise the system to see if it leaks (or fit a blanking plate instead).

As per Chedders suggestion, there are details of testing the extra air valve here: http://www.vintagemodelairplane.com/pages/Download...

Could it be the coolant temperature sensor?

Try removing the plug and shorting it out.

Are you still running the V8D 4.6
This I think will be fitted with a hotwire system, on these they have an Idle control valve, these are prone to sticking, so take it out and give it a clean, and also check it working.
It will be at the back of the plenum, with a wire and a hose connected to it.
