So, having caught a Fifth gear article on the Caterham Academy, I liked the idea of some nice amateur racing series..
However, thats up at £19k - and includes the car (you have to build) and only 7 races...
What i'd really like is some amateur race series, where i pay a nice big lump sum, turn up at a track, am given a car, race... give car back... go home.. etc..
Is there any series like that?

Do you want to race a Caterham style car? Tiger do a similar thing but they build the car for you, no idea on the price though.

in formula ford you can do this with some of the larger teams. I raced in the north west championship and there were a few people who did this. You can buy a car for about 9k and have some one run it and bring it to the track or rent one from a team. You do have to pay for any damage, but that the same any where. You still have to pay for testing and race entry. I think the 19k for Caterham includes all race entry. which if you get to keep the car is great value.

oh, i realise that - i have absolutley no experience, so was just looking for a cheaper way of dipping my toe into racing to see if i like it or not.(and no, you wont get anyone to pay YOU for a drive!!)

We do indeed. We can offer a choice of mk1, mk2 or mk3 MR2s for use in the 750MC MR2 Championship and have availability for the rest of the season. You can see the Championship calendar here:http://www.mr2championship.com/calendar.htm

WRT the Academy, it really is a good setup. The race license itself can cost you a few hundred quid to complete, and the car will hold most of its value. There are also loads of great Caterham racing series that the car will be eligible for at the end of the season. Some people even drive their cars to the events rather than trailer them.
I would highly recommend Caterham racing, all of the series are competitive and close, slipstream makes for lots of overtaking, and the cars are great fun to drive and cheap to maintain/fix. If you fancy Caterhams I'm sure there's at least one Roadsports team that does arrive and drive. Alternatively you could buy a 2nd hand car for considerably less than 19 grand, race with the Caterham Graduates Club and get McMillan Motorsport (series tech support) to transport it to each event for you. Grads has a great atmosphere, cheaper running costs than Roadsports and superb racing.
Don't forget that on top of the license you'll need to buy a race suit, fireproofs, helmet, boots etc. They're all expensive and you'll want to buy the best you can afford.
ETA - Just to say, I did the Academy and raced Caterhams for a few years before recently moving on before I get accused of working for Caterham!!

I don't race myself in anything anymore, my son is currently racing karts at a national and european level and I am just involved in the UK motorsport scene. I know Alex Lennon races in the MR2's and was looking at his progress the other day so I did some research into the series - sorry I can't be more interesting to you.
