An aircon question.
Discussion
If you have Low Gas, the Air Con won't kick in, and the light won't illuminate. It looks like your gas level is just on the borderline.
I had mine on today, and I'm glad I have air con, when your stuck in heavy traffic and rarely getting above 60, and even the wind is warm, the Air Con may not be brilliant, but it certainly makes things better.

I was thinking that myself that it could be a "borderline" issue. Just wanted to check with someone else. Just to make sure is 750g the right amount of gas to put in??.I had mine on today, and I'm glad I have air con, when your stuck in heavy traffic and rarely getting above 60, and even the wind is warm, the Air Con may not be brilliant, but it certainly makes things better.
the ampount of charge they take varies hugely. The way to make it work properly is to take it up to say 700 then test the temperature at the vent add 25 g test again etc etc until it works properly
the reason the amount of charge varies is because the pipes that tvr fitted are all different lengths hence different volumes

My cerb has a little sticker on the F1 panel that says AirCon charge 1kg (1000g).
It had stopped working last year, so this week I put in a small can of leak-stop rejuvinator.
This got the clutch to engage, but the temp from the vent was not cooling.
Went back to Halfrauds and stuck in a 510g can of refrigerant and temp dropped by about 4 DegC.
But still not reading any pressure on the suction side of pump. HMM!
In fact it was showing below zero.
Instruction on can says it should read at least 15psi.
So another can of said 510g Halfrauds best and temp dropped another 5DegC and I just got the gauge to read in the plus side of zero.
So with two cans (1020g) temp dropped to 15DegC from 22DegC
Now here's a question for those that know??
Should the suction side (small fitting) read 15psi when running??
With engine off, it reads about 45psi, so system is pressurised now and I hope all the leak-stop goo will keep is working for Le Mans.
But I am thinking of sticking another (£40) can of the stuff in to see what happens.
Will it explode??

my air con had no gas in it at all, i pressed the pressure valve and not a drop of gas came out but still the blue light would illuminate.
I never had it gassed as ive wasted my money before on bmws where kwikfit gassed it one day and the next day the stuff had escaped and i had no a/c so i removed my compressor off the AJP but left the wires/hoses, cable tied away around chasis tubes.
If there was a home DIY way to test if the system could sustain pressure and that it would not leak the refridgerant then i would refit it but at the moment I dont want to wast £45 after £45 to find the problem.

I know this because I took the car the Kwik fit on saturaday and they connected it to one of their machines and decanted the refrigerant (none), checked, cleaned and topped up the lubricant and charged with new refrigerant...all for £45. It took about an hour to cycle through.
From memory the guy told me it should have taken about 800g (not sure where this info came from) and only took about 650g...he said this could be due to an internal failure of a component but wouldn't be able to tell without stripping the system down...not something they do.
Anyway, system worked a treat - nice cool air! How long it will continue to work is anyones guess!
My blue light comes on and I know I have no gas in the system as I just haven't got around to having it regassed after having the aircon rad rebuilt.
Just after I got the car I had it gassed and my guy phoned the factory who said it was PAG46 oil and 600g of gas!

The stated weight will be a guide only as the precise figure will depend on the condition of various components and the ammount of oil that has been added to the system with previous top-ups. The pressure that the aircon runs at is largely determined by the ambient temperature.
The best way to top it up yourself is by using a digital thermometer in the vent positioned so you can read it through the window. Shake the top-up can well then stand it in a jug of hot water and connect to the low pressure side with the aircon running. Allow the aircon to fill until the temperature on the thermometer stops going down. Stop adding refrigerant as soon as the temperature starts to creep back up, then let the system run for 5 min during which the temperature will drop again slightly. You now have the optimum charge.
Dont be tempted to invert the can and let liquid refrigerant into the system as you may get a hydraulic lock in the aircon pump - not good! Provided you keep the can warm it will fill without a problem.

I need more gas in mine as I have no cold air. It was fine last year. The blue light also remains on. If I have no more gas in the system I have been told that I may have a small leak and if I have it regassed, it may not last long before it wants doing, which is fair enough. My question is this. How long do the aircon systems generally last before a regas is need. I've had the car 6 1/2 years without problems, so I'm guessing its never been topped up since new...11 yrs.

The guys at raceproved are sorting mine out as we speak. They have a technician that is very knowlegable about TVR air con systems. My blue light came on but the motor/compressor did not start; Problem - no gas in the system. They regassed the system and use a UV dye which shows any leaks. Outcome; ice cold air but a leak on the drier that sits under the passenger side headlight - the unit had been sat in water and completely corroded. New drier being fitted as we speak.Give them a try, much happier using someone who knows the system than some clown at Kwickfit having a go!

Why do people always think these guys are clowns? The guy who 'fixed' my car did just that, 'fixed it' and he knew his stuff...and knew a bit about TVR's.
I know where you ar ecoming from and I wouldn't let 'the clowns' fix my engine, clutch, etc as I consider them to be quite specialist and specific to a TVR but air con systems are 'type' specific and generally relie on the same technology, ie the refrigeration cyle. Plus, all they did was connect a machine up to the system and it did the work.
By all means recommend someone but referring to people you havent met as clowns is a out of order to me.
If you want your air con re-gassing its not rocket science. If there is a fault with the air con it will need more than re-gassing so then speak to someone who specialises in air con systems, TVR's or both..?

I agree however, the electrical side of the TVR A/C system is not simple and unless you know what feeds what and which signals should be where.I know where you ar ecoming from and I wouldn't let 'the clowns' fix my engine, clutch, etc as I consider them to be quite specialist and specific to a TVR but air con systems are 'type' specific and generally relie on the same technology, ie the refrigeration cyle. The issue here could be more complicated than a simple gas leak with the blue light not working and I'd hate to let someone from Kwikfit loose on my car. Especially when you can easily plug the heater control box wires into the wrong bit and blow it up!

I know what you were getting at.
There are good guys in bad places and bad guys in good places I guess.
I always try and hang about when my car is being worked on - as I did when he AC was being regassed and when it passed it MOT yesterday - just to make sure there isnt a monkey, sorry clown, working on my P&J!
I asked the guy at Kwikfit what he was about to do and it involved nothing more than connecting a machine to the fridge side of the AC system...if it encountered any problems it registered a fault and stopped...if this happened they admitted they wouldn't be able to help and would recommend visiting a specialist...and there would be no charge. Seemed fair enough to me...and my car was in good company at the time...a rather smart looking black S type R...the owner of which seemed to appreciate Cerbs as well!
