I have an old and rusted wrought iron bench that's been sitting under a hedge for a while - it looks perfectly sound.

I'd like to get it sorted and used in the garden and am thinking a light brush with an angle grinder and then a suitable paint.

If anyone has repaired something similar is there anything in particular I should watch for?

Wrought iron is intricate. I'd use an electric drill with one of these:

ETA then brush the dust off and paint with Hammerite.

Yes, good advice. You've probably just saved it from me wrecking it!

I haven't looked, but assume you can get white Hammerite? Does it need an undercoat?

No undercoat needed. Will probably require a couple of coats though, so check the instructions on the can as the second coat needs to be applied within a certain time-frame.

You also need special thinners (cellulose) if you ever want to use the brush again - either branded Hammerite or trade cellulose thinners if you can get it.

Actually it might be simpler just to use a cheap brush and throw it away nuts

ETA: Use a decent mains drill to get enough speed and torque to do the brushing properly.
