Any pointers engine wise. I'm fine with all the rest, chassis etc. Just need to know my way around the engine, where's the dipstick, coolant etc. It'll be noisy at first startup? but settle down?
All tips welcome
Thanks in advance. thumbup

Go for it! mine has been great. The owner should know where everything is you need. It will be noisy if cold but check that goes away once ran for a bit and warmed up. Oil pressure is usually low, very, when hot but this seems normal, mine will drop below 20 on idle if its hot but I hear of people where it goes much lower than that.
And as the post above says, check for rebuilds, mine hasn't had one, it didn't put me off so much as it's a late 2003

its a dry sump so there is an art to checking the oil, car must be warm. undo the dipstick (screwed into the oil reservoir infront of the engine, unmissable, its big and silver), dont remove. turn engine off, remove dipstick, wipe, re-insert and then check. (mine seems to work ok like this anyway)

Well it was missing & if you let it idle for a minute or two then raise the revs you'd get an impressive puff of blue smoke come up from the exhaust manifold!! Oil leaking on to the manifold may be? If it was a crack wouldn't it be consistent every time you rev it?

It could be something minor, but If you have any doubts, then just walk away.

This is more advice for the seller than for me really. I can see that it needs to come apart because it missed the whole time & then it would give a nice puff of smoke from the exhaust manifold area when it was 'blipped'.

I would say that the smoke puff comes from oil leaking from the valve cover onto the manifolds. If that is the problem it could be somebody that has been taking the cover off without knowing how to put it back on again with sealent and o-rings in place. If the o-rings that seal the cover to the head around the holes for the sparkplugs are leaking, you will get oil on the sparkplugs and wires, which could cause a missfire.
If it is a standard camcover and cover over the sparkplugs and the sparkplug cover isn´t sealed as it should be, you will have water ingress (the seller might have cleaned the engine to make it look nice) in the holes for the sparkplugs, this will absolutely cause a missfire.

Wyn, joining the club then eh?

I'm a little spoilt right now as the Cerb 4.5 LW is my fun drive and I still have my Chim 450 as a daily driver.....more fun!!

They are both totally different, Cerb's an animal when it gets going, missus loves its looks, but prefers to drive the Chim.

Cerb turns heads everywhere, not just the fully de-catted kind of turn but looks great;)

Hi Gav, the one I saw is a beautiful car except for the engine faults. I think owning a Cerb next is inevitable. Got everything crossed the Griff will find a good home soon. Bloody should at this price, even though it needs a few bits & bobs. yes
