btw, i assume all modern pipe work is 100mm now? I'm meeting the plumber tomorrow on site but was just browsing to get everything ready.

oops, 10mm. Is that microbore? All the TRV's seem to be 15mm to 15mm, i found some reducing olives. I'll ask him tomorrow what he wants.

Minibore pipework (15mm) is as small as you want to go really. Microbore is used for bodgy systems with pipework dropped behind dry-lining etc.
The flow through 10mm makes systems noisy in my experience.

Oh my, 10mm pipework in the house.

Why do they do this ? I know that its easier to put in etc, but no subsititute for good old copper.

Are you also saying that its microbore right up to the valves ? If you are going to put this dreadful stuff in at least change to copper (ideally chrome plated) prior to coming out of floor.

It'll go 10mm right up to the TRV. You'll then need to use special enlargers to gain the 5mm increase necessary for the TRV.

Worked in a house with 8mm micro bore the other day. Funnily enough the radiators didn't work very well and the towel rail run was blocked with sludge. Horrid stuff.

Thanks guys. I am guessing the pipe work will be 10mm as i thought all new builds were? I know the house we are in now(1998 build) is. Anyway, meeting up at 2pm so i'll know for sure then! Found the TRV's for £26 inc vat a piece but will see what the others in the house will be first-may just end up matching up with a chrome version.

I use Danfoss TRV`s myself, mainly because they never generate callbacks in my experience.

As for 10mm Micro bore if the system is well designed installed and maintained it is a perfectly acceptable method of wet central heating, as Ferg said the higher pump pressures needed can generate some noise in the rads and pipe work but is generally not a problem. Most of the problems come down to poor maintenance, sludge for instance should not be found in any system but because of the size of micro bore tube the detrimental effects are greater than they would be in a small bore system.
