A colleague of mine bought a TDV8 RRS new in March 08 (£50k+) and has had a number of the faults reported in the above press report and other faults not reported. Coming from a S-Class he can't wait to swap back to a Merc but the finances are prohibitive for another 6 months or so - I think Merc offered him £25k at 25k miles for the RRS against a full price S-Class about a month ago. That's about a £30k loss in just over 12 months
without taking in to account the number of times it has left him standed!

Why is there a £10k difference between the Glass Trade in Value (£35500) and the allowance offered by the Mercedes Dealer?
without taking in to account the number of times it has left him standed! Looking at the prices dealers are asking for 08 RRS TDV8's I am at a loss to work out why we are seeing such big variations in valuations.
Is it because of the impending launch of the heavily revised model or fears about the long term future of Land Rover?

I assume you are referring to the Glass's guide? Looking at the prices dealers are asking for 08 RRS TDV8's I am at a loss to work out why we are seeing such big variations in valuations.

I'm not in the trade so can't answer the specific question, but vehicles of the same year (2008 57 plate) with less mileage are currently being offered for under £35k on Autotrader (that's before any discount) which suggests the Glass's figure is not an accurate trade figure.
Perhaps this Merc dealer/sales person wasn't that hungry for a deal at the time? I'll let everyone know what the actual swap value is when the order is eventually placed.

I have been looking for a Range Rover TDV8 Vogue and find the prices that the dealers have been asking far higher than the guide prices and even though I have no p/ex they seem only willing to knock off a few pounds, their attitude being one of take it or leave it as we are short of used cars.
The snow fall earlier in the year, and perhaps the endorsement by Jeremy Clarkson of the product in The Sunday Times, seemed to have given the dealers confidence a big boost and I am now hoping that the launch of the revised models will increase the flow of used vehicles through part exchanges and dealers demos being updated thus reducing prices to more realistic levels. Time will tell.

If you friend shopped around, he would get a much better bid on the RRS, just look at at Auction prices. BTW, Merc S-class of similar value will lose approx the same in today's market! I can't believe he couldn't negotiate a huge discount off an S-class at a time when 15% discount is being offered on M3's, X5's, Lexus, Jag and 10% is being offered on certain Porsche products. He obviously didn't try hard enough or wants to add weight to his hard luck story. It's a shame you mate has had a bad experience with Land Rover, but Merc products have also suffered from terrible reliability problems as well.
