Dodgy pipes!

Went to pick up new pipes to replace cats on tuesday evening (big thanks to Jools for hangin' on for me) and on the way back down M1 my current axhaust started to blow (what are the chances of that happening then, eh!), Was hoping it was something to do with the cats, as I was about to replace them, but when I got the car up on stands the pipe had a clean cut all the around just in front of the back box. Has this happened to anyone else? and are these exhausts particularly weak?

Anyway i manged to get it welded up yesterday (should hold out) and have now removed the cats, it now sounds FANTASTIC pops and bangs I've never heard before. Anybody who's thinking about doing this, DO IT sounds great and is easy enough to do on axle stands.

Seeing as your exhaust is packing up it sounds like a perfect excuse to put on sports pipes aswell.....

Mine did the same, both sides just before the back box, with a decat it sounded rather smashing

They have been welded up now but it still seems lound..not that I mind. My wife and son are worried if they are not woken to the inevitable backfire when it starts up..

Was thinking about sports pipes rather than welding back up and its something I definately want to try, but I've already spent enough for the time being maybe in the new year.

yeah very common for the *piss-poor* std TVR box to fall to bits .. need welding at every service to stop them doing this really.

The irony of course is that the TVR box sounds best and the sports pipes sound pretty un sporty in comparison .. oh well.

Back box is definitely mad out of paper and sticky-back plastic.

I've had a few problems with mine. First the tips fell off and then were welded back on. Then some baffling came loose and was rattling around inside. This was removed and for a while it sounded superb. I have recently had it de-catted and the sound got even better but unfortunately the back box decided it had had enough and the remainder of what was inside came loose and performed impressions of a hammer hitting a metal bucket. Fortunately the garage had a spare back box (swapped out for a sports exhaust) which had only done 1000 miles so my old was has been chucked and the new one sounds superb if not a little quiet. Still a few decent drives and overrun should sort it out

From what you say does this mean the Sports pipes are slightly harder wearing.

the sports pipes generally come with a lifetime guarantee, or at least a very very very long guarantee ..
