I previously attempted this on a NAS, now I have got a portable hard drive so I can store my photos there and work on either my desktop PC or my MAC, using the NAS to back them up on

Could somebody help me as to how I should set this all up. ie file and folder management and what functions within Lightroom to use. I'm pretty vague on the best way to go.

I have a whole batch of new photos too to play with that I recently imported onto my macbook also that I need to move over and maybe rerarrange in a better organised way?

Cheers
Woody

Just "Import from Disk" or use auto import and set your external drive as one of the folder to monitor.
Am I seeing this problem as too simple?

Do the imported images and associated data all go into the same catalog? and shall I just have one catalog on my hard drive for everything?

You should be able to drag and drop in Lightroom to move all the photos to the new drive. I would then suggest exporting the catalogue and putting it on that drive, too. You should then be able to import the catalogue on the other machine when you connect the drive to it. (You might have to jiggle about making sure that both machines refer to the drive in the same way.)

BTW - you need to re-import the catalogue on the first machine, too if you want to use the same one on both.

Just resurrecting this, because I've found a tutorial on the subject.

i haven't watched the video yet, so can't vouch for whether it's relevant, but you might want to give it a go if you haven't sorted it yet.

Thanks MB, only managed to have a watch of that, I was advised by someone else to store the catalogs on my external hard drive (maybe in folders created as Lightroom/catalogs, and my original photo files in Lightroom/pictures ?), so then I wouldnt have to export catalog each time, can an error be seen doing this? I'm just about to try and do all this...eventually getting there!
