mk1 mr2 clutch change and brake service?

Hi i've found an mr2 which could possibly be cheap, its £400 with good bodywork, no MOT or tax. Apparently the clutch is slipping and the brakes will need servicing-ne idea what 'brake service' would mean? how much it would cost to be done at a garage or even how easily by someone with bugger all mechanical knowledge and a manual? cheers.
Clutch isn't a DIY job even for a reasonably competent home mechanic. I'd guess at around £300 (not much less) for a garage to change.
Brakes can be DIY if you pay attention to how they come apart. Discs and pads tend to be surprisingly cheap - would think around £150 for new discs and pads all round. If you need new calipers that can get expensive.

It's a bugger to do but the clutch is definitely doable at home. The hardest part is supporting the car properly while you wrestle the gearbox on and off and line it up with the dowels.
I did the clutch on my mk1 t-bar on the garage floor and it certainly wasn't impossible.
Just take off the gearbox top mount and torque mounts, lower the engine and box on the jack but keep the drivers side engine mount on, unbolt everything from the box and then the box itself from the engine and wrestle it off. Change clutch and then refitting is a reverse of removal.
Brake service means new pads and discs (if worn) and taking the calipers off to free up the pistons and grease them correctly. A kit doesn't cost much from the likes of Brakes International.
Messing about with brakes though, not a good idea if you don't know what you're doing.

Get the replacement parts for both at Brakes International. If you can afford the extra get the reconditioned calipers - they are really good! The clutches they supply for that car tend to be made by Luk and it has a very nice feel to it. Get the brake pads from your Toyota dealership - You can get good prices for good parts there on some things and terrible prices on others. Brake pads are one of the things to get there and the factory pads are very good. Replacing the clutch cost be about £120 in labour at the 3S Service Centre near Hook. Brakes I can do but I'm not adventurous enough yet to try a clutch.
