Omega Speedy Chrono
Discussion
Hi all
Have been window shopping used Sinn, Omega & IWC for a while (IWC a bit too pricey for me!) around the £1k - £1.5k.
However a work colleague has offered me an Omega Speedmaster Chronograph - it is black faced, about 38mm 3 sub dials, no date with the main second hand being the timer, and a sub dial for the timed seconds (if that makes sense).
It is on a black leather strap, fair to good condition and boxed (but without cards, book etc) - year etc unkown.
I have taken a shine to it and been offered it for sale - any ideas what I should pay for it?? Would it be a good deal if it is under £500??
Had a quick search around the Bay but couldn't find anything comparable due to finish!

Yep, seconded.
Worth finding out if it is a Speedmaster reduced or not. They do a slightly smaller faced version - you'll be able to tell the difference (without comparing it to another for size of course) because the third (lowest) chrono dial sits almost over the dial at 6 o'clock whereas on the full sized face model it is more central. The reduced also has minute markers at 5 minute intervals on the face, unlike the full sized version.

There is a lot of interesting info on a variety of Omega models plus instructions on how you can check the serial number (assuming you can get hold of that from your friend).

At 38mm it's the Speedy Reduced. A more obvious clue will be the word "Automatic" on the dial.
£500 would be a fair, but not bargain of the centuary price if it's in good condition on an OE strap.
I sold my mint condition reduced with box & papers on the OE bracelet for £800 around new year if that's of any help.

I have one of these, but on a bracelet
There are actually two spec "levels" for the reduced
One has hesalite + normal buckle on the bracelet, RRP around £1000
The other has sapphire glass + deployant buckle on the bracelet, RRP around £1300
I went for the latter as I didn't like the idea of scratches on the face.
I would recommend it, but it does run slightly fast, perhaps 3 mins a month. But then it's not a chronometer so I can't complain
I believe the larger professional (manual wind) model comes with hesalite only. It seems to be more popular with aficionados and probably holds its value better

The full sized model is also available with sapphire glass, but yes the Hesalite faced model tends to be seen as more authentic because its propensity to crack (rather than shatter) under extreme conditions was the reason for its flight certification over some of the other watches considered.Gassing Station | Watches | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
