Just watching 'Anglia News' who were reporting on a Fatal road traffic Collision which occured on the Southboud A1, just south of Huntingdon this morning.

A man had parked his vehicle in a layby and he was then collected by the front of an HGV which was presumably travelling at about 56mph.
Naturally the road was closed all morning causing untold misery for 'joe public'.

Some old geezer was being interviewed and he was whinging that the road was closed for such a long time and demanded to know why?

What is it with these people, why dont they care about no one else but themselves.
Wonder how he would feel if a member of his family had died in such circumstances, all their scattered body parts were recovered into a bin liner and the road reopened 15 mins later.........it beggers belief.

I saw that on Anglia News also.

It seems to me a dangerous place to have an unprotected layby on the A1, and would have thought that stopping there was just as unsafe as the hard shoulder on a motorway.

People need educating about the dangers of stopping in such places.

Its the way people are these days, no time for anyone else, and only interested in whats going on around them when it affects them.
Im a breakdown mechanic, and recently had to go to a broken down vehicle at one of the most busyiest traffic light junctions in cambridge, took me ages to get there as traffic was horrendous. When i did get there everyone was blasting their horns and swearing at the guy that had broken down and causing the problems.
If these irrate drivers had taken a moment to help push the guy of the junction they would have been on their merry way instead stuck in the traffic jam.
Morons............

What was the old git doing out anyway.

Doesnt he know he should be at home with his pipe and slippers instead of being out on the roads creating more traffic!

To be honest I have seen so many old people driving dangerously recently that I think they should all be retested or confined to buses as they are a menace to the rest of us.

I think it reflects societies views on the roads, and latterly why speed limits aren't obeyed.

That is we are all desensitised to death and if the question 'how mant deaths are you willing to tolerate to be able to drive at the speed you like' is asked, it almost certainly would be a figure > 10 per year/ person.

Sorry but I am one of the impatient ones.

Quick sweep up and let the lucky ones still in the land of the living get on with their lives uninterupted.

Was with a mate once, massive tailback. After an eternity we got to the point where a bloke was having some fairly heavy weight lifesaving medical treatment.

Mate shouts "Inconsiderate bastard."

Right on!

Agree wtf are they thinking , do you really want to be parked there in the first place , Mine cut out at a junction earlier in the year and then I think it flooded on the restart it . Muppet behind starts beeping because I've put my hazards on, as you do, it was a two lane junction so there was still room to get past.
Funny enough he stopped beeping when I got out and explained that I would rather be moving

There is something about being in a car that brings out the worst in people.

And in our increasingly "fvck you" society, it ain't going to get any better.

Sorry TR! I enjoy a troll as much as the next man but this isn't one.

I really do get p*ssed off in traffic for a fatal.

The guy is dead, there might be blame on someone else's part but is it really worth holding up thousands of people for hours (Been on two closed motorways this year!) when the guilty party is either dead or will *never* make the mistake again.

It's a view I'm not proud of but it is how I feel!

Absolutely agree and it not just fatals. I was 3 hours on the 62 once cos a lorry load of hay has been spread all over the road. As I got to the lorry I heard the driver say to the cop "Yis but wot about me aye" I could have cheefully killed him WTF are we doing letting £2.50 worth of dead grass cause £10M worth of tailbacks?

ah there you go... similar with road works, lots of james but no/few workmen actually working. Think of the number of man hours lost because of the jam and they workers dont work 24/7.

Road works should be 24/7.

Ps If it helps save a life I dont mind being stuck in a jam. but road works yes I do.

If it's me I'd want zero fuss. Pick up the body and let others get on. Can't tell how I'd react if it was a loved one but I know *they* wouldn't want 10,000 people an hour late because of their demise.

Of course if it saves a life that's totally different! I'm talking about post fatal investigations. I'd wait forever for a lifesvaing procedure. (Allbeit no very cheerfully!)

Thanks to plod for dealing with these incidents. Can't be very pleasent and I reckon everyone respects the work they do!

An alternative point of view is that a major road closure diverts thousands of people who are late and frustrated onto unfamiliar local roads they don't know. How many accidents does that cause?

I don't dispute that a road should be closed, but it is the amount of time involved. Obviously in the A40 closure where the road needed to be relaid that you were recently involved in there was no alternative. But in a relativley simple investigation like this.

I have been driving for more years than I would care to admit, but I have noticed in recent years a tendency for the BiB to completely close a road, for long periods, on which there's been an RTA whereas once they would have allowed traffic to pass, albeit slowly. It almost seems as if it's some form of wrist slapping exercise. Edited for spelling etc!

It was funny at the time! I think the irritation of the traffic jam combined with the shock of seeing some poor bastard getting CPR (and from the length of time it was a pretty hopeless excersise) meant we needed an outlet and laughter is the best one!
