hi i have the chance to replace my clio for a 1999 vw golf gt tdi with 100k on clock, only trouble is guy tells me the abs works fine but the front sensors have been removed and it needs tlc with the electrics and the 'i' light is on. i have been told this could be cause the sensors have been removed or its the steering angle sensor or something. i would have thought if it was the sensors then removing them would stop any lights coming on once they are reset! what could be the real problem here any ideas of what it could be and cost roughly please please help. i dont mind spending a little but again dont want to have a death trap cocting too much to repair for myself to be in or my family etc thanks steve

how can the abs work if there are no sensors fitted, and if there are no sensors fitted, why? cant think of a single reason worthy of not having them.

run a mile from it, isn't as though there are not many golfs around, find a better example

also i know a common fault with the lagunas is abs light on but no fault, so ppl remove the sensors for the abs and tyre pressures and reset the light and it stays off with them but all manufactures are diff????

a bargain with faulty brakes? glad you feel confident in risking your and your families life in the event you need to slam on those brakes and the abs doesn't kick in resulting in a skid/locked wheel slide

I have worked with vw's for 6 years, and not once known a "common" fault with the abs system or its sensors on the mkIV golf

You call at the end of the day, but my opinion is leave it and get a 100% safe car from the start

Quick question... do your brake lights work?!!!? Brake light switch failure is a "common" fault on the Mk4 golfs (ex VW technician), and this will cause your (!) light to illuminate, also, on top of the battery is a black plastic flap, open it, you will see 3 green fuses..chances are these may have corroded, causing the abs module to not have enough power causing the light to illuminate, replace the 3 20A fuses, check your brake lights work, then hola back if all is ok....

brake light switch chucks the engine management light on or the EPC light, not the (!) symbol

just had to put a new brake light switch in my golf . abs light is on and has been for a year . main dealer said its common for the light to come on . i have a spare abs control box thing if its any use to you . i got a used replacement but never fitted it and have since sold the car . (with the light on)
