Hello all, I may seem like a newbie but I’m more of a lurker...long story short me and CrashTD are doing something epic for charity this summer- oh and this isn’t a ‘sponsor our holiday thread’ so please read on...

On July 18th 2009 we begin a 10,000 mile journey across Europe, around and across the Black and Caspian Seas, and then through Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Khazakstan, and Russia, before arriving at our destination, a remote village in Mongolia called the Sunshine Ger Project. Run by a charity called The Christina Noble Children’s Foundation, this place provides a safe home with food, healthcare and an education for hundreds of orphans and abandoned children.
When we arrive our van [a 2000 Daihatsu Hijet] will be auctioned off and the proceeds, along with all the money we are raising, will be donated directly to the charity. We have bought the van and are paying for everything (i.e. visas, camping, fuel, food, possible flights home) ourselves- just to make it clear we’re asking for donations to the charity not beer money!
If you could make a donation (minimum is only £2.00) via our website we would be eternally grateful, it’s all for a very good cause!

Also we’re having a car meet and charity pub quiz on Friday 26/06/09 near Derby if anyone can make it, should be a good laugh! Details here-

Thanks to anyone who can help, or come along on the 26th.
Char
xxxxxx

p.s. sorry to mods if this is not allowed...I don't think it does any harm though?

Just a heads up that Turkmenistan border are turning away travellers because of the Swine Flu "crisis" rolleyes so bear that in mind and have a back up route.

Good luck! You'll have a brill time biggrin

Good luck, we did it in a Beford Rascal back in 2007! You'll have a great time!

Taking a van is definitely a good idea, the extra space you have when on the road makes the journey much more pleasant!

Edd- Ah yes, Russ...Ive chatted to him a bit. Shame he couldn't make it to Wales last weekend.

Tom- Did you make it the whole way? Yes extra room is a must with there being 3 of us.

isee- Yes indeed, if anyone is intersted I can post some on here???

Had some of my jabs today, my arms bloody killing! Been talked into getting rabies jabs though my original plan was to use the 2 guys as human shields should there be any rabid dogs in the desert.

Thanks to those who donated today, kinda says something that people who don't even know us have donated, yet my work colleagues and some friends from a car forum who I've known years haven't donated a penny...frown
Said forum also offered sponsorship then changed their minds for seemingly no reason.

Don't think too badly of them, some people donate to other charities by direct debit and are happy with that. I do too and never usually respond to charity collectors outside of that, but liked your idea and would have loved to do it myself!

Will be very eager to see the pics of the trip, sounds like a very unique experience with a noble cause too!

It's a very difficult climate to fundraise, everyone is watching their pennies, people worried about loosing their jobs, jealousy, wrong idea that they're paying for you a holiday etc etc, so many reasons people don't donate.

I personally think unless you know someone on the inside co-operate sponsorship is also very difficult to get.

My family probably won't sponsor me right until the last minute or even until I get back, besides I've already needled most people I know for stuff over the years hehe

Good luck and don't feel too disheartend!

Char - Yes we did make it all the way (for a fair bit of it Rach* was tagging along too!) its a fantastic thing to do and you'll never forget it!

One bit of advice which someone gave me before we set off which really stuck with me is that you have to remember it's about the journey, not the destination. So when everything seems to be going wrong just remember that the best adventures are had when things that you have planned aren't necessarily happening as they should!

Sponsorship wise, we had a nightmare trying to raise our money, but you will get there in the end! We ended up doing things like collecting unwanted stuff from friends/family which they didn't want and selling it at car boot sales and putting all the money raised towards our target.

You'll find that people and companies are generally much happier to give you stuff rather than actual money, and the smaller companies have less corporate hoops to jump through so it is much easier to get things from them!

You will see soon enough.

It was built mainly in my workshop (read barn) it took a lot of thought and effort to get that on there trust me!

I will also be down at the launch day with them as well.

Good stuff! Reggie Hijet is going strong...well much better since we took the thermostat out! Did a quiz night on Friday and raised another £110 for our charity of choice...we're getting there only about another £500 to go if anyone can spare a couple quid! www.rastamouse2mongolia.com

2 weeks on Saturday we head off, still much to organise and fair few bits to do on the van as well, but it's all good fun!

what engine is in your hijet?

i ask as my dad had 3, all around 2000, 2 diesels, 1 petrol
both the diesels engines blew up, something like a screw in the inlet coming loose, cue huge smoke screan and dead van

this happened on both vans at similar milage, the petrol one was ok, and consuderably faster, but still slow

i always remember coming back from school in them over a hump back bridge, and all the gear in the back leaving the floor
