With the IOM TT this coming week, I was wondering which would cover the 37.73 mile mountain course the fastest? John McGuiness has posted a lap average of just over 130mph, could a car beat this?

I don't think the course is wiggly enough for a car's grip and speed through slower corners to count for much. Too many open sections where a bike can accelerate and get up to speed quicker.

Edited to add - Phenomenal riding bow

I was wondering the exact same thing last night. They are now averaging over 131mph a lap. I would LOVE to see a car lap the IOM, maybe a Radical, or something similar could have a pop, they do crack the magic 200 in place's if i'm correct. IOM F1 Grand Prix anyone?biglaugh (my monies on the bike for now).

I reckon a current WRC car with the correct gearing and the air inlet restrictor taken off the engine (500bhp should be about achievable), would probably be able to give the bike a run for its money. It won't get any where near the bikes top end acceleration but should claw back time on the bendy bits.

I've just decided that my first idea is frankly bks! I'm going to side with those who've suggested a Radical or maybe something from the LMP1 class at Le Mans (just not sure how it would cope with the lumpy bits).

I think someone like Radical should give it a go. A lot of sportscar makers want to be associated with the Nurburgring, why not set a time round the TT course?

yes It's really bumpy in a lot of places.

Don't think that will ever happen even though journalists always use the likes of Cadwell or any other tracks that doesn't suit bikes
and proclaims that cars are faster than bikes rolleyes It's kinda pointless to compare anyway but McGuiness v Walter Worhl in their
choice of machinery on the TT IOM and then Nurburgring would be interesting biggrin

Isn't Cadwell supposed to suit bikes? Thats what I read somewhere (Evo or Autocar), because it is very narrow, with some decent straights and slow corners. On the IOM, I am sure a Radical SR8, or SR3 Turbo (like the one that set the Ring record a while ago) would be quicker than a bike.

having driven the tt course this year i fail to see how any car could beat a bike on that unless it was car verses scooter laugh

Didnt Tony Pond get the 100mph ave speed lap in a road production Rover 827 Vitesse back in the late 80's - I dont know what the bike record was at the time but the car wasnt the fastest one could buy at the time.

One thing though these are road production bikes running slicks so you cannot do modified car vs std bike. WOuld love to see it though as the dvd I have of tony pond shows on every straight he is up to 145mph and nearly 1k into the red in top gear... he also drifts it round some corners with sotne walls just missing them at huge speed.

Car to do it now 911 Turbo/GT3 RS. You need amazing brakes where you'll beat the bike and good cornering grip & good mechanical grip where you can again beat the bike - on the straights though some of these bikes nutters are doing 200mph+ on bumpy road ashphalt.... would need a proper racing car driver J Herbert maybe to tackle the course at super high speed.

I wonder if the M3 V8 or M5 V10 would nail a 120mph ave speed lap??

I can remember years ago they did do a timed lap by a car, it was a Ferrari of some sort and I watched it fly down Bray Hill from my Grandmas garden. Would be awesome to see a Radical SR8 give it a go, if they could get a soft enough suspension setup I think it would get pretty close.

Bike without question.

Most cars would be finished by the time they hit (literally) Ballaugh Bridge.

The bikes with rider probably average out at about 1000bhp per ton, which is matched by some cars which can put their power down better. The bikes can use more of the road to give them a better line through the corners, but they have to slow more for some of the tighter corners. Using the Nurburgring records as a rough indicator would suggest the car would have it too.

Overall I think a car could edge it.

I couldn't believe it when a commentator said that some of the bikes were taking it at 60mph eek, none of the supercars on our trip took it at more than 30.

I can't think of a car that would be small and nimble enough to get round the lanes at a decent rate, that would also have a high enough top speed, - the Caparo was too stiff to go over the tramlines at speed.

Plus the fact, unlike with some of the bikes, I can't see anyone being able to fix it with lawnmower parts! wink

Not a Manx cat in Hell's chance.

Nothing has.

I imagine a car would be doing well to average 90-100mph per lap, at best.

Edited to avoid confusion

Exactly.

Ballaugh Bridge then the section from Sulby Bridge through Ramsey Hairpin and on to Waterworks/Gooseneck would destroy the cars chances. Too twisty and bumpy.

The Mountain Mile would be interesting though as would seeing them come off the Creg. wink
